Cougars Welcome SF State and Sonoma State to The Sports Center This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – With the spring semester beginning this week, the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team returns to The Sports Center to host San Francisco State on Thursday and Sonoma State on Saturday.

THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
  • CSUSM went 1-1 last week.
  • The Cougars dropped an 84-60 decision to cross-county rival UC San Diego on Thursday night. Junior forward Savannah Camp tallied a team-best 18 points, going 7-of-13 from field and 4-of-6 behind the arc. 
  • The Cougars put together a balanced offense to record a 65-61 victory at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night. Junior forward Monica Friedl and junior guard Raegan Lillie each tallied 13 points while senior guard Dee Armenia and Camp chipped in nine points apiece. Junior forward Lupe Cruz blocked five Coyote shots and Friedl knocked down four to become No. 1 and No. 2 in the CSUSM single game record books. 
  • In the CCAA statistics, CSUSM is ranked second in 3-point field goal defense (.251) and third in free throw percentage (.716).
  • Senior guard Ashley Jenkins and junior guard Raegan Lillie rank in the top 10 in the CCAA in free throw percentage. Jenkins is No. 5 with a .800 (60-of-75) free throw percentage and Lillie is No. 9 with a .765 (62-of-81). 
     
RUNDOWN OF SAN FRANCISCO STATE
  • CSUSM is 0-1 against SF State in all-time series. 
  • Cougars dropped an overtime heartbreaker at SF State last year by a score of 50-48 at the Swamp. Camp recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while then-senior center Brianna Higgins pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds.
  • The Gators are on a 12-game losing streak with four games being decided by four or three points.
  • SF State ranks second in blocked shots per game (3.44) in the conference.
  • Senior center Donae Moguel is eighth in the CCAA in rebounds per game (6.6).
 
SONOMA STATE BREAKDOWN
  • The Cougars holds a 2-1 advantage over the Seawolves in the all-time series.
  • CSUSM swept SSU last year, recording a 73-61 win on Homecoming Night (Dec. 5) before taking down the Seawolves in Rohnert Park on Feb. 13, 60-49.
  • The Seawolves rank second in the conference in scoring, averaging 68.1 points per game. SSU is dominating the conference in free throw percentage with a .777 clip (244-of-314).
  • Junior guard Madison Burroughs is the CCAA steal leader, averaging 2.4 steals a game.
 
THE CCAA CONFERENCE
  • Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Conference, made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego.
  • The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
 
THE JIMENEZ FILE
  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her second season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its sixth season of existence.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 132-89 in her eight seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
