SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team could not keep up with Cal Poly Pomona's size and fell by a final score of 68-47 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Thursday at The Sports Center.
With the loss, the Cougars drop to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The Broncos improve to 8-7 overall and 6-3 in the CCAA.
CSUSM shot 14-for-50 from the field, while the Broncos went 20-for-60. CPP used its size and aggression to outrebound the Cougars 48-32, including 23-10 on the offensive end. The Broncos had 19 second-chance points and outscored CSUSM 28-14 in the paint.
Freshman guard
Chloe Eackles recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard
Raegan Lillie was the Cougars' leading scorer with 15 points. Chelsea Waddy-Blow paced CPP with a game-high 25 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
The Broncos led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, with eight of CPP's points coming from Waddy-Blow. CSUSM briefly tied the game, 24-24, on a 3-pointer from Eackles. The Broncos answered back with a 12-5 run to end the second quarter to lead 36-29 at halftime.
The Cougars were outscored 32-18 in the second half and ultimately fell by 19 points. CSUSM could only muster 12 points in the third and six points in the fourth.
The Cougars will have a day off before hosting Humboldt State on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
