Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos softball team took down Cal State East Bay 7-4 in the opening game of their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) four-game series on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Softball Field, but fell in game two, 11-3 (5 inn.).
The Cougars move to 9-29 overall, 6-22 in CCAA play. The Pioneers move to 14-22, 9-15 CCAA.
CSUSM and CSUEB will wrap up the set tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.
Game 1The Cougars took advantage of four Pioneer errors and erupted for seven unearned runs in come-from-behind 7-4 victory in game one.
Holly Fauria was 3-for-3 with an RBI,
Lindsay Cerulle went 2-for-4 and
Ashley Dagenais (5-12) won her second straight start.
A three-run homerun by Ali Cerminara put CSUEB ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, but CSUSM responded with a three-run fifth to tie it up.
Karla Bernal was hit by a pitch before infield singles from Cerulle and Fauria loaded the bases.
Melyssa Bellamy's groundball was mishandled by the CSUEB short stop and Bernal scored for the Cougars' first run.
Then, a throwing error by the Pioneer second baseman on Hoenisch's grounder allowed Cerulle and Fauria to score.
CSUEB went back in the lead in its half of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, 4-3.
The score held until the Cougars' final at-bat, when Bellamy led-off with a single and
Robyn Alvara came aboard with a walk. They promptly moved to second and third on a wild pitch.
Bellamy would score on an error on a relay throw by the second baseman to tie the game 4-4 with one out in the seventh.
The first baseman then overthrew the bag on a ground ball by
Abby Allen, and pinch-runner
Sara Langdon came in to score to make it 5-4.
Fauria's infield single drove in Allen before and RBI single drove home Hoenisch to make it 7-4.
CSUEB's first two batters reached safely on back-to-back hits off Dagenais, but the Cougar right-hander was able to retire the next two batters.
The go-ahead run came to the plate after a walk loaded the bases, but Dagenais struck out the final batter on a full count to end the game.
Dagenais allowed six hits, three earned runs and four walks while striking out three.
Game 2The Cougars fell in game two due to three big innings by Cal State East Bay.
CSUSM led 1-0, but a grand slam in the second inning by Gabby Gonzalez pushed CSUEB out in front, 4-1.
An unearned run in the third and a RBI sacrifice fly from Bernal in the fourth pulled CSUSM within 4-3.
However, CSUEB answered with three runs in the fourth to push the lead to 7-3.
The Pioneers led off with a single and a double in the fifth before scoring on a sac fly to make it 8-3. An RBI single from Sierra Clark added another before a two-run home run from Cerminara ended the game, 11-3.
Bellamy and Cerulle each went 2-for-3. Bellamy scored twice.
