SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team rallied from a 3-2 deficit to earn a 6-3, 16-inning victory over San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field.
With two outs in the top of the 16th, senior
L.A. Gamo crushed his second triple of the game to drive in sophomore
Riley Manquen and junior
Ross Lemmel who reached on an error and walk. Sophomore
Tyler Place followed with a single to right field to plate Gamo and put CSUSM up 6-3.
The Cougars improve to 17-18 overall and 9-14 in conference play, while the Gators drop to 16-14, 9-10 in CCAA.
After walking the first Gator in the bottom of the 16th, junior
Hayden Weir (5-2) recorded the win after forcing a fly out and a 6-4-3 double play. Weir came into the game in the bottom of the eighth with two outs. He retired the side in three of the next seven innings, allowing just five hits while striking out six.
Place led the Cougar offense, going 5-for-9 with a double and two RBIs. Junior
Hudson Bilodeau registered three hits, including two doubles.
SF State scored in the first frame on a CSUSM error. The Cougars knotted the game in the top of the second and took their first lead in the third on a RBI single by Place.
Errors have haunted the Cougars all season as SF State recorded two runs on a CSUSM throwing error in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Cougars evened the game in the top of the eighth after junior
Ross Lemmel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Senior
Emilio Esquibel once again got a no-decision after going six innings with all three runs unearned. SF State had nine pitchers take the hill with Nathan Pisciotta recording the loss.
The Cougars out-hit SF State 16-9 and stranded 21 runners on base compared to the Gators' 12.
SF State's Bryce Brooks went 3-for-6 with a double.
The Cougars host CCAA North Division leader Sonoma State next weekend.
