SAN MARCOS, Calif. – For the third time this season, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team was held scoreless on Sunday as the Cougars dropped the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series finale, 4-0, to No. 29 Cal Poly Pomona at CSUSM Baseball Field.
Bronco starter Michael Koval (3-0) went the distance with a five-hit shutout. He retired the final 15 Cougars, struck out six and walked none to earn the victory. Cal Poly Pomona (15-7, 7-3 CCAA) recorded the conference sweep in the first meeting between these two teams.
The Cougars (10-14, 2-10 CCAA) struggled to get their offense going, scattering five hits over the first five innings.
Junior
Colin Dvorak was the only Cougar to reach second safely after leading off the fifth with a single and advancing on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Riley Manquen. Back-to-back ground outs ended the inning for CSUSM.
CSUSM starter
Manny Barragan had a solid outing on the mound, giving up one run on six hits over 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out four while walking two batters.
The Broncos got on the board in the first inning when Jared James hit a one-out double to right center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Jason Padlo's single up the middle.
CPP tacked on three runs in the eighth, coming off two singles, a double and a walk.
The Cougars will play Cal State Dominguez Hills in another split series next weekend.
