Early Runs Lift Cougars to 11-6 Victory at Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Junior Taylor Ahearn continued to torture opposing pitchers, going 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs to lift the Cal State San Marcos baseball team to an 11-6 victory over Biola in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Field.

The Cougars (4-1) complete the series sweep after defeating the Eagles, 9-8, in last week's 2016 season opener. Biola (3-6) has dropped six consecutive games after beginning the season with three victories.

Junior Hudson Bilodeau also produced at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs.

The Cougars wasted no time getting on the board, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Senior L.A. Gamo drew a walk to begin the game and sophomore Tyler Place singled to put runners at the corners. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Austin Ott and senior Brandon Bentson's triple brought the runners across. Bentson later scored on a Biola error to close out CSUSM scoring in the first.

Ahearn hit a two-out RBI double as Gamo followed with a bases clearing single to extend CSUSM's lead to 7-0.

In the fifth, Ahearn knocked down a 2 RBI single to left field to make it 9-0.

The Eagles charged forward, racking up three runs in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to make it 9-6.

The Cougars answered by posting two insurance runs in the eighth on a wild pitch and an error.

Head Coach Dennis Pugh planned ahead for it to be a piece together rotation game with no pitcher throwing more than three innings. Starting right-handed pitcher Emilio Esquibel was rewarded the win after 2 1/3 shutout innings.

Biola's Sean Rothfuss was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs – four earned – in four innings on the hill.

The Cougars travel to Irvine on Friday to begin a four-game series with Concordia, starting with a doubleheader there before returning home the next day to host the Eagles in a twinbill.
