SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos baseball team completed a four-game series sweep over La Sierra with 13-5 and 14-5 victories in Friday's nonconference twinbill at CSUSM Baseball Field.
The Cougars racked up 31 hits off the LSU pitching staff that included 11 doubles and one triple.
CSUSM improves to 8-4 while the Golden Eagles fall to 6-9-1 on the year.
On the day, senior
Brandon Bentson went 5-for-8 with three doubles while driving in five runs and plating four times. Seniors
Clinton Perez and
Jon Putnam along with sophomore
Tyler Place each collected four hits.
The Cougars open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play next Friday when they host Cal State L.A. to begin a four-game split series.
Game 1: CSUSM 13 - LSU 5For the sixth time already this season, CSUSM scored in the opening frame. Sophomore
Austin Ott hit a two-out double down the left line and scored on Bentson's single to left center. Bentson later scored when Perez's single hit the same location as Ott's ball.
CSUSM doubled its lead two frames later.
The Cougars broke the game open in the fourth, sending 14 men to the plate and hung seven runs on the scoreboard to take a 11-0 lead. The inning consisted of four walks, three singles and two hit batters.
La Sierra scored a run in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of a CSUSM error.
CSUSM tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 13-1.
LSU's Brandon Turner crushed a grand slam in the top of the ninth.
CSUSM's starter
Manny Barragan (2-0) collected the win after tossing four shutout innings and fanning six batters. Gabriel Gonzalez was handed the loss after giving up eight runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Game 2: CSUSM 14 - LSU 5 Once again, CSUSM did not waste any time getting on the board after Perez doubled down the left line to plate Ott.
La Sierra's offense saw some light in the top of the second, scoring four runs on two hits and three walks.
The Cougars resumed their scoring pace in the bottom of the third inning. Place led off the inning with a triple off the right center wall and came home on a relay error. The woes continued for the Golden Eagles as Ott reached on an error and advanced to second. Bentson, Perez and freshman
Mark Van Skike all knocked out RBI doubles to give CSUSM back the lead at 5-4. But the Cougars were not done as junior
Colin Dvorak drew a walk and sophomore
Riley Manquen followed with a single to load the bases. Place, who got the inning started, drove in two runs on double to the right corner. Ott once again reached on a LSU error as Manquen and Place scored to make it 9-4.
After LSU pushed a run across in the top of the fifth, CSUSM tacked on two runs in the bottom of the frame and three runs in the next.
Junior
Hayden Weir entered the game in relief to earn his first collegiate win, relinquishing only one hit in 1 2/3 innings. LSU's Erik Estrada picked up the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in two innings on the hill.
