The CSUSM women's basketball team is hosting a four-team tournament this upcoming weekend with the Cougars playing No. 2 Cal Baptist on Friday night and Montana State Billings on Saturday night. No. 17 UC San Diego will be playing the team CSUSM is not facing that night at 5:30 p.m.
THE COUGARS AT A GLANCE
- Three Cougars are back from last season's squad – Savannah Camp, Ashley Jenkins and Jasmine Matar.
- CSUSM has 12 new players on this year's roster, including eight junior college transfers and two four-year transfers.
- CSUSM was picked to finish seventh in today's CCAA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
RUNDOWN OF NO. 2 CAL BAPTIST
- First meeting between the Cougars and the Lancers.
- CBU competed in the 11th D2 Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) Tipoff Classic held at Santiago Canyon College Athletic Complex in East Orange last weekend. The Lancers defeated Simon Fraser and No. 3 West Texas A&M before falling to University of Mary.
- The Lancers are the defending PacWest champions and were the preseason favorite in the coaches' poll.
MONTANA STATE BILLINGS BREAKDOWN
- First meeting between the Cougars and the Yellowjackets.
- MSUB will be without its Greater Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Alisha Breen due to suffering an injury in last week's exhibition game.
- Last season, the Lancers were runner-ups in the GNAC Tournament and earned a berth to the NCAA Division II West Region Tournament, getting knocked out by No. 1 seed Azusa Pacific in the opening round.
THE CCAA CONFERENCE
- Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Conference, made up of 12 Cal State institutions and UC San Diego.
- The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
THE JIMENEZ FILE
- Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her second season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its sixth season of existence.
- Jimenez has compiled a 132-89 in her eight seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
