CSUSM Athletics Mourns Loss of Saul Resendiz

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos freshman student-athlete Saul Resendiz passed away on January 1, 2016.

"We are shocked and saddened by this news. Saul was a model student-athlete at CSUSM," said Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo. "We are a family and when we receive this type of news it shakes us to the core. Our thoughts are with Saul's family, friends and teammates at this time."

Counselors were available on campus on Monday to provide support for students.

"Words do not describe the pain that the CSUSM Soccer Family is experiencing right now. Saul was an extraordinary human being who possessed the very highest character qualities and was a model for the core values of our program: Respect, Integrity, Commitment, and Spirit of Excellence," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers.

"Additionally, he was a terrific footballer known for his excellent vision and passing qualities. Saul was the ideal combination of a white-collar player with a blue-collar mentality. He possessed a tireless engine, and a feel for the game that was beyond his years. Saul was the consummate teammate in every sense of the word and his legacy will live on in our program."

Saul acheived a 3.8 GPA during his first semester at CSUSM. He started six of his 15 appearances for the Cougars this season at center-mid.

Saul is survived by his parents, Crescencio and Angelina, sisters Guillermina, Elizabeth and Maria, and brothers Alejandro and Jose. A public funeral mass is scheduled for Friday at 12 p.m. at Resurrection Church in Escondido before a procession to Oak Hill Cemetery for a graveside service.
