TURLOCK, Calif. – Junior
Ashley Jenkins led all players with 18 points, but it was not enough as the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team dropped a 63-60 decision to host Stanislaus State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Saturday night at Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
The Cougars fell to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Warriors improved to 8-4, 4-2 in the CCAA.
In addition to her 18 points, Jenkins tallied seven assists and five rebounds. Junior
Paige Barber registered nine points and five boards while sophomore
Savannah Camp chipped in eight points and a team-best six rebounds.
Down 38-32 at the half, CSUSM's offense came alive once again in the third quarter by outscoring the Warriors 16-11. The Cougars closed out the frame with back-to-back 3-pointers by Jenkins and Camp to trail the host by just one point (49-48).
A Camp jumper 12 seconds into the fourth quarter gave CSUSM its first lead of the second half. A 13-5 run put the Warriors up 62-55 with 2:30 remaining in the contest. A pair of free throws by sophomore
Lynette Mackey and Camp's 3-pointer made it a 2-point game with just over a minute on the clock. Stanislaus' Cassidy Sanders-Curry made the second of her two free throws to put the Warriors up 63-60.
The Warriors had four players in double digits with Riley Holladay leading the way with 15 points. Erika Larsen and Reana Hardin each and 11 points and Ana Burch added 10 points.
The Cougars host Cal State East Bay on Thursday, Jan. 7 at MiraCosta College. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
