CSUSM Falls in Four in CCAA Opener

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Competing in the first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game in school history, the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Humboldt State on Wednesday night. The final scores were 25-19, 23-25, 27-25 and 25-20.

The Cougars fall to 3-6 (0-1 CCAA) while the Lumberjacks move to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Junior Brooke Butler and freshman Ashley Pedersen each tallied a team-best 15 kills to go along with their four digs. Sophomore libero Samantha Flores recorded 25 digs in the match.

The first set was back-and-forth which turned out to be the theme of the night with neither team building a larger lead than a single point through the first 29 points.  A 9-2 HSU run proved to be the deciding factor as the Lumberjacks snagged set one 25-19.

Set two looked like a repeat of the first until two kills by Butler sandwiched by a Lauren Lee ace put CSUSM up 18-14.  The Lumberjacks charged back but a three-point run by the Cougars evened the match at 1-1 with a CSUSM 25-23 set victory.

Following the 10-minute intermission, both teams came out with new energy. The Cougars put together a 5-0 run to knot the set at 22-22. CSUSM had two set points but the Lumberjacks rallied to take the set at 27-25 after three unanswered points.

The fourth set featured the same makings of the previous three.  HSU rattled off a 5-1 run to take the set at 25-20 and the match.

The Cougars return to the court Thursday, Sept. 17 when they welcome UC San Diego to the Hunter Gym.

Note: Tonight's volleyball match was the first one played in program history on CSUSM campus.
