SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team scored 31 runs on 29 hits including home runs by senior
Dylan Costello and freshman
Austin Ott as the Cougars swept La Sierra in doubleheader action on Friday afternoon. Final scores were 19-4 and 12-1.
Both games lasted only 4.5 innings due to the 10-run rule decided by both coaches prior to the first pitch.
With the wins, the Cougars improve to 28-14 while the injured ridden Golden Eagles fall to 8-37.
Senior
Denny Vigo went 5-for-5 with three doubles and drove in three runs on the day. Costello went 3-for-6 with six RBIs and junior
Stefan Miladinovich 4-for-7 with two triples and a double.
Both CSUSM starters,
Kyle Montiel (3-3) and
Manny Barragan (4-2), earned victories after only two innings of work.
The Cougars take the weekend off before starting their final week of regular season with a showdown against San Diego Christian at CSUSM Baseball Field on Tuesday, April 22. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
Game 1After a shaky start by Montiel who allowed three LSU runs, the Cougars were itching to get a chance to bat. CSUSM put up 10 runs on five hits including a Miladinovich triple, three hit by pitches and two walks.
It was just smooth sailing from that point on as the Cougars posted six runs in the second inning, a run in the third and two more in the fourth.
Montiel gave up just one single in the second before retiring the next three batters. After relinquishing another leadoff single in the top of the third, Montiel was relieved by
Jordan Kunz who gave up a two-out single that scored LSU's final run of the game. Sophomore
Hayden Weir and Miladinovich each tossed shutout innings to close out the game.
Game 2Once again, the Cougars wasted no time getting on the board. Only difference was the CSUSM scored eight runs while shutting out LSU. The first inning was highlighted by Ott's first collegiate home run and RBI triples from Miladinovich and freshman
Tyler Place.
The Golden Eagles scored their lone run in the top of the second after putting together three singles.
The bottom of the frame featured Costello's two-run homer and a sacrifice fly by Ott.
Back-to-back doubles by Vigo and Costello put the final CSUSM run on the board.
Barragan allowed four hits and one run in two innings on the mound. Freshman
Elliott Stepanof, Ott and senior
Justin Hertzmann each tossed an inning of shutout baseball.
