Cougars Win Season Series Over San Diego Christian with 11-6 Victory

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Back-to-back bases loaded hits by junior Brandon Bentson and senior Ray Patchen in the bottom of the seventh broke open a tight game and helped lead the Cal State San Marcos baseball team to an 11-6 victory over San Diego Christian Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field. The Cougars took the season series, 3-1, from the Hawks.

CSUSM improves to 29-14, while San Diego Christian falls to 10-39.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Bentson singled to left field, scoring freshman Austin Ott to give the Cougars an 8-6 lead. Patchen followed with a ground-rule double to left-center, scoring L.A. Gamo and Stefan Miladinovich and extending the Cougar lead to 10-6.

Miladinovich went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk, Gamo went 3-for-4 with a double, and Clinton Perez went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three runs scored.

Junior Jordan Kunz (1-1) picked up the win in relief, striking out a pair of batters, allowing one hit and no runs over two innings.

The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of first inning, with Gamo scoring on a Patchen sacrifice fly to deep right field for a 1-0 lead.

SDCC loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second, but Manny Barragan, starting for late-scratch Addison Domingo, surrendered just one run after forcing the Hawks into a double play and a ground out to end the inning with the score tied at a run a piece.

CSUSM regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second on Gamo's bloop double to short left that scored Perez. The Hawks evened it back up at 2-2 in the top of the third.

The Cougars struck with a big inning in the bottom of the third. Freshman Tyler Place hit a bases-clearing double to give CSUSM a 5-2 lead.

Capitalizing on a leadoff walk, a hit batter and an error, the Hawks battled back to score four runs in the top of the fourth and take a 6-5 lead.

Another bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth produced two more runs for the Cougars, as Miladinovich hit a two-out single up the middle to score Place and Perez and regain the lead at 7-6.

The big seventh inning for the Cougars yielded four runs, as pinch hitter Kory Smith followed the Bentson and Patchen hits with a single through the left side to drive in the fourth run of the inning and an 11-6 lead.

Kunz, sophomore Hayden Weir and junior Cameron MacKenzie closed out the game striking out two batters each over the final five innings.

The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Biola. Originally scheduled for 1 p.m., first pitch will now be at noon. The final game of the regular season is at home on Friday against Bethesda. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

Notes: Stefan Miladinovich, Brandon Bentson, and Dylan Costello are the only Cougars to appear in all 43 games this season … Pitcher-turned-outfielder Clinton Perez is hitting .545 (18-for-33) … Cougars extended single-season doubles program record to 121 (101 – 2011, 2012) ... Ray Patchen, who broke the CSUSM hit streak record earlier this season with 24 consecutive games, has reached base safely in 33 consecutive games and ranks No. 3 on the CSUSM list. Trent Jemmett holds the record at 43 games.
