SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Back-to-back bases loaded hits by junior
Brandon Bentson and senior
Ray Patchen in the bottom of the seventh broke open a tight game and helped lead the Cal State San Marcos baseball team to an 11-6 victory over San Diego Christian Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field. The Cougars took the season series, 3-1, from the Hawks.
CSUSM improves to 29-14, while San Diego Christian falls to 10-39.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Bentson singled to left field, scoring freshman
Austin Ott to give the Cougars an 8-6 lead. Patchen followed with a ground-rule double to left-center, scoring
L.A. Gamo and
Stefan Miladinovich and extending the Cougar lead to 10-6.
Miladinovich went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk, Gamo went 3-for-4 with a double, and
Clinton Perez went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three runs scored.
Junior
Jordan Kunz (1-1) picked up the win in relief, striking out a pair of batters, allowing one hit and no runs over two innings.
The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of first inning, with Gamo scoring on a Patchen sacrifice fly to deep right field for a 1-0 lead.
SDCC loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second, but
Manny Barragan, starting for late-scratch
Addison Domingo, surrendered just one run after forcing the Hawks into a double play and a ground out to end the inning with the score tied at a run a piece.
CSUSM regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second on Gamo's bloop double to short left that scored Perez. The Hawks evened it back up at 2-2 in the top of the third.
The Cougars struck with a big inning in the bottom of the third. Freshman
Tyler Place hit a bases-clearing double to give CSUSM a 5-2 lead.
Capitalizing on a leadoff walk, a hit batter and an error, the Hawks battled back to score four runs in the top of the fourth and take a 6-5 lead.
Another bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth produced two more runs for the Cougars, as Miladinovich hit a two-out single up the middle to score Place and Perez and regain the lead at 7-6.
The big seventh inning for the Cougars yielded four runs, as pinch hitter
Kory Smith followed the Bentson and Patchen hits with a single through the left side to drive in the fourth run of the inning and an 11-6 lead.

Cameron MacKenzie closed out the game striking out two batters each over the final five innings.
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Biola. Originally scheduled for 1 p.m., first pitch will now be at noon. The final game of the regular season is at home on Friday against Bethesda. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
