SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Relays ruled the day for the Cal State San Marcos track & field team with two squads qualifying for the NAIA National Championships at the Mangrum Invite on Saturday afternoon.

The Mangrum Invite served as one of the headline events for Discover CSUSM Day, which invited thousands of prospective students to visit the campus to see what it has to offer in a college experience. The competition included 13 intercollegiate teams from the NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I.

"What an incredible day, we've never had a home meet like this. It was definitely the deepest field we've had here and I think our team performed well in front of the home crowd," said head coach Steve Scott. "It helps when our athletes' friends and family are in the stands to help give them that extra boost."
 
The women's 4x800m relay team of Cristen Lane, Elizabeth Buckle, Raelyn Werley and Charlotte Kuzminsky started the meet off on a high note for the Cougars by placing second in the race and posting an "A" standard time of 9:20.33. Kuzminsky has now qualified for two events, having posted an "A" standard time in the 1500m at last months Aztec Invitational.
 
Not to be outdone, the men's 4x800m relay team of Ryan Maize, Justin Washington, Zach Laurenzana and Alex Gronotte qualified for nationals in the very next event with an "A" standard time of 7:42.77. Maize (3000m steeplechase, 1500m) and Washington (800m) had qualified for nationals earlier this outdoor season.
 
Freshman Jordan Lucas is quickly making a name for himself. He won the 100m with a time of 10.73, besting the "B" standard time by .01 and the next best competitor by .08. Lucas has placed in the top-three in the 100m for three consecutive meets.
 
Frederik Jahr also hit the "B" standard in the high jump with a leap of 2.03m. Jahr cleared the "A" standard height of 2.06m, but the bar fell when he landed on the mat. He also placed third in the long jump, posting a mark of 6.85m.
 
Brittany Hollie registered an "A" standard time of 14.72 in the 100m-hurdles, the fourth time she has achieved the "A" standard in the event this season.
 
Natalie Rodriguez (4:40.49) and Steven Ing (3:56.22) clocked "B" standard times in the women's and men's 1500m. Both previously qualified for nationals in the event.
 
Lane posted a "B" standard time in the 800m for the second straight week with a time of 2:15.63.
 
Jason Bandong ran a season-best 54.68 in the 400m-hurdles, .18 off of the "B" standard.
 
The men's 4x100m relay team finished third with a time of 42.78 and the men's 4x400m relay closed out the meet taking second place finish with a time of 3:19.51.
 
The Cougars will be back on the track on Friday, April 16 for the Bryan Clay Invitational Track and Field Meet at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Athletic Stadium.
