Cougars Hold On, Then Blast Bethesda in Friday's Twinbill Sweep

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team put together 16 runs on 22 hits to sweep Bethesda in Friday's doubleheader.  With their 5-1 and 11-0 wins, the Cougars improve to 14-8 overall.

Freshman Tyler Place led the Cougars, going 4-for-6 with two triples and a double on the day.  Seniors Dylan Costello and Ray Patchen each collected three hits and two runs. Patchen hit his first home run of the season in game two, bringing CSUSM's season total to eight.

The Cougars wrap up their four-game series against Bethesda with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7.  First pitch is 11 a.m.

Game 1
The Cougars wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs on two hits and one Bethesda error. With the bases loaded and no outs, Patchen crushed a 2 RBI single off the right center wall.  Vigo followed with a sacrifice bunt that the Flames bobbled and allowed a CSUSM run.

Costello's RBI double in the bottom of the third raised CSUSM's lead to 4-0.  The Cougars added another run when Patchen scored on a 643 double-play.

The Flames threatened in the top of the ninth, scoring a run on Justin Powell's single through the left side.  With the bases loaded and no outs, the Cougars went to their closer Justin Hertzmann.  The senior right-handed pitcher forced a pop-up and followed it with a strikeout before clinching his sixth save of the season with a groundout.

Sophomore Addison Domingo improved to 3-1 after seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits while striking out five and walking two batters.

Game 2
It took the Cougars four innings to adjust to Bethesda's unique starting pitcher Esau Madrigal that throws both right-handed and left-handed.  Yet, when they did, the Cougars offense exploded by scoring a season-high 10 runs in one inning.

Senior Denny Vigo sent the first pitch of the inning to the left center wall for his 11th double of the season.  Costello singled to put runners at the corners.  After Putnam drew a walk, pinch hitter John Swilley drove in the first run of the game after turning an eight-pitch at-bat into a walk.  Junior L.A. Gamo followed with a RBI single up the middle.  With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Brandon Bentson cleared the bases and scored on a two-error Bethesda play.  Patchen hit a solo shot over the left field wall. After Vigo and Costello drew back-to-back walks, Putnam hit a RBI single to raise CSUSM's lead to 8-0.  Place ended the Cougar scoring on a 2 RBI triple to right center.

CSUSM added one more run in the fifth when junior Stefan Miladinovich doubled and scored on a fielder's choice by pinch hitter Kory Smith .

Senior Kyle Montiel tossed a 7-inning complete-game shutout to improve to 2-1.  He struck out eight and gave up only two hits in the outing.

Notes: All nine Cougar starters recorded a hit in the second game ... Vigo extended his streak of reaching base safely to 20 games which puts him in a five-way tie in CSUSM record books ... Patchen is in the midst of a 13-game hitting streak, ranking him fifth in the CSUSM record books.
