KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team received the No. 3 overall seed and will face Philander Smith College (Ark.) on Wednesday, March 18 at 11:15 a.m. in the First Round of the 2015 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
The Cougars (28-3) earned their third straight trip to the NAIA national tournament by virtue of winning their second consecutive Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference title last Saturday. CSUSM has won five straight.
The Panthers (20-9) were granted the 15
th at-large bid for the competition after falling in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship. They fell to then-No. 1 Talladega (Ala.), 93-89.
CSUSM holds a 2-2 all-time record in the NAIA National Championship. The Cougars, who received the No. 1 overall seed for the 2014 edition, advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated in overtime by eventual national runner-up Emmanuel (Ga.).
PSC is also making its third consecutive trip to the national tournament. The Panthers are 0-2 all-time, having never advanced past the opening round. They were eliminated by William Carey (Miss.) in the 2014 opening round.
CSUSM and PSC have never met.
The winner of CSUSM-PSC will face the victor of No. 14-seed Georgetown (Ky.) (25-7) and Arizona Christian (24-8) in the Second Round on Friday, March 20 at 8:45 a.m.
Hope International (29-2) received the tournament's No. 1 overall seed, and Talladega (29-4) was handed the No. 2-seed.
