Four Cougars Hit "A" Standards at Surf City Half Marathon

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos track & field teams kicked off the 2015 season this morning at the Surf City Half Marathon along the Pacific Coast Highway and the Huntington Beach pier.

Four student-athletes posted times under the NAIA "A" standard, and two others posted "B" standards in the 13.1-mile race. Making the "A" standard automatically qualifies the racers for the full 26.2-mile marathon at the 2015 NAIA National Championships in May.

On the women's side, all three runners ran times under 1:30:00, the "A" qualifying standard. Kate Bouvatte posted a time of 1:19:40, one second off CSUSM's school record of 1:19:39 (Morgan Sjogren, 2009).

Lauren Morabito and Bethany Gracia ran times of 1:27:41 and 1:29:24, respectively.

On the men's side, Enrique Ramirez ran 1:10:46, well under the men's "A" standard of 1:12:00.

Bouvatte, Morabito, Gracia and Ramirez automatically qualify for the marathon at the NAIA National Championships.

Daniel Ybarra's 1:12:36 was just a half-minute slow for the "A" standard, but he and Michael Waltrip (1:13:32) were comfortably under the "B" standard of 1:14:00.

By hitting the "B" standard, Ybarra and Waltrip will be included in a pool of student-athletes who could potentially compete in the marathon at the national championships, depending on the amount of athletes that hit the "A" standard.

The women's team continues its season next Saturday, Feb. 7 at the La Verne Invite. The men's team is off until the Rossi Relays on Feb. 28.
