CARSON, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team put together a late charge against the two-time defending California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament champion Cal State Dominguez Hills but fell short with a 63-58 decision on Thursday afternoon at the Torodome.
The Cougars fall to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in CCAA play. The Toros (6-6) improve to 4-0 in conference play for a share of first place with Cal State East Bay in the CCAA standings.
Sophomore
Savannah Camp led all scorers with 22 points on top of her six rebounds. Junior
Ashley Jenkins added 13 points.
CSUSM's offense stuttered in the second frame as it was limited to just eight points. The Cougars were scoreless for six minutes before a
Paige Barber layup with 27 second remaining made it 32-24 CSUDH at the halftime break.
The Cougars closed the gap by outscoring the Toros, 18-14, in the third quarter.
CSUSM knotted the game twice between the seven and four minute marks in the fourth quarter but both times the Toros answered with a bucket. Camp's jumper with 1:17 remaining made it 60-58. CSUDH's Breanne Garcia went 3-for-4 at the charity stripe to clinch the win.
Garcia and Monay Lee each tallied 15 points for the Toros.
The Cougars open 2016 with a road game at Stanislaus State on Saturday, Jan. 2. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
