Cougars Drop Season Opener at UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team fell to UC San Diego, 73-60, in California Collegiate Athletic Association(CCAA) play on Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. The game served as the season opener for both teams.
 
The Cougars tied a program single game record, connecting on eight 3-pointers with six coming in the first half.
 
CSUSM drops to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Tritons improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA. 
 
Sophomore Savannah Camp led the Cougars with 16 points, shooting 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field. Juniors Ashley Jenkins and Lynette Mackey chipped in 11 and nine points , respectively. Senior Brianna Higgins joined Camp, Jenkins and Mackey in recording five rebounds.
 
Farrah Shokoor led the Tritons with 19 points and nine rebounds, finishing one shy of a double-double. Cassie Macleod pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
The Cougars got off to a quick start, dropping five of its eight 3-pointers in the first quarter to take a 21-13 lead.  
 
After an 11-3 run to begin the second quarter, UCSD evened the game at 24-24 on a layup by Jamie Katuna at 7:34.  The Tritons would take a 38-30 lead into halftime after outscoring the Cougars 25-9.
 
A pair of Jenkins free throws at 6:28 in the third quarter knotted the score at 40-40 after outscoring UCSD 10-2 out the gates of the second half. The Tritons got back on top and held the lead the rest of the game. CSUSM trailed 62-49 at the end the third frame.
 
CSUSM closed the game on a 9-0 run but the UCSD lead was just too much to overcome.  
 
The Cougars have nine days off  before traveling to NCAA Division I UNLV to face Rebels on Monday, Nov. 23. Tip-off is schedule for 7 p.m.
