KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Marguerite "Meg" Montjoy, a kinesiology major and a student sports medicine intern for the Cal State San Marcos Department of Athletics, has received the 2014 NAIA-ATA Al Ortolani Athletic Training Undergraduate Scholarship, the national office announced.
Â
The annual scholarship is awarded to NAIA students of junior-or-higher academic status with at least a year of experience as a student trainer; in addition, the student must be endorsed by the institution's full-time NATA-certified trainer and must hold at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
"When I think about all the students I've worked with, Meg stands out at the top. She's extremely insightful and cares deeply for our student-athletes," said CSUSM head athletic trainer Michelle Hamilton. "She is going to make a terrific athletic trainer because Meg has the passion and desire to do a good job. It's hard to put into words everything she does for our athletes. It's her nature, almost like it's her calling."
Montjoy, a senior from Oceanside, has been working with CSUSM athletic teams over the last three years since arriving on campus as a freshman. In her first year at CSUSM, she was named lead intern for men's basketball, the first time in the program's history that a freshman was named a lead for a contact sport.
As a sophomore, Montjoy was appointed head student intern and continues in that leadership position to this day, mentoring other interns while also taking care of her day-to-day responsibilities.
"My biggest role models, supporters and teachers have been [former] assistant athletic trainer Mike Curran and head athletic trainer Michelle Hamilton," said Montjoy. "Mike has impressed upon me the need for thorough and precise triage, evaluation skills and techniques while keeping composure in high-stress situations. Michelle has taught me the importance of this profession in society and has showed me ways to improve the workplace for the betterment of all those in it."
Montjoy was the student lead for the top-ranked CSUSM men's basketball team for the entire 2013-14 season. She served as CSUSM's on-site athletic trainer during the team's run to a Final Eight appearance at the NAIA National Championships in Kansas City.
She also worked the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship and the NAIA Outdoor Men's and Women's Track & Field National Championships.
