The 2013 Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team bounced back from a sub-.500 season to put together its most successful campaign since 2010. The Cougars were unbeaten in their first nine games and went on to finish 11-4-2 overall. Six players were named
All-Association of Independent Institutions and
Scott Rice became the program's fourth
All-American.
CSUSM started the season on the front foot with a
5-0 road drubbing of Caltech. Goals from
Jacob Stolmeier,
Luka Stevanovic,
Alex Jaziri and
Diego Fontes rounded off a solid start to the season.
The Cougars increased its shutout streak to three with a
3-0 win over Hope International (9/4/14) and a
2-0 win over Soka University (9/7/13). Fontes and Stevanovic scored in the win over HIU,
Eric Lopez scored in each game, and
Angel Mora opened his account vs. Soka.
CSUSM took its unbeaten record on the road, this time to Las Vegas, to take on Great Falls and No. 22 Rocky Mountain. CSUSM fell behind early against Great Falls, but the team's took a 2-2 game into overtime. 34 seconds in,
Louie Farfan found
Scott Rice inside the area and Rice headed home to goal for a
3-2 victory.
In CSUSM's second contest of the Las Vegas swing, CSUSM scored three goals in the first half on its way to a
4-2 win over No. 22 Rocky Mountain. It was the Cougars' first win against a ranked team since 2010. Jaziri scored the final two goals.
On the heels of their 5-0 start, CSUSM received
its first-ever ranking in the NAIA Top 25 when they came in at No. 22 on Sept. 17.
The flawless start appeared to end that same afternoon, as San Diego Christian downed CSUSM 1-0 in El Cajon. However,
CSUSM was retroactively granted a 1-0 forfeit victory because SDCC had played an ineligible player.
The Cougars posted back-to-back ties at
No. 9 Biola (11/19/13) and
The Master's College (11/21/13) before taking down
Westmont (9/24/13), 1-0, on a lone goal by Rice in the 10
th minute.
The Cougars were once again on the road, this time at the Westminster Invite in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Beehive state was not friendly to the Cougars as they dropped a pair of 1-0 losses to both Rocky Mountain and Westminster.
The Cougars bounced back from their first losses of the year by extinguishing the
Bethesda Flames, 2-0, on Oct. 8. Midfield maestro
Yuki Hata contributed assists to both Lopez and
Sullivan Tobin.
CSUSM trailed 1-0 to La Sierra at half time on Oct. 19, but a penalty kick by Jaziri and a strike from Hata helped
CSUSM escape with a 2-1 victory. Â
The Cougars honored graduating seniors
Panos Kotselas and
Richie Kaiser with a hard fought
2-1 victory over Westminster (10/26/13).
Ron Pulvers record his 200
th career victory as a men's intercollegiate head soccer coach.
Three days later, the Cougars ended the season with a
1-0 win over Point Loma Nazarene to round out the regular season 11-3-2 overall. Jaziri scored the game winner in the 93
rd minute.
CSUSM was granted the
No. 2-seed for the A.I.I. Conference Championship in Lawrenceville, Ga. The Cougars fell behind to host and No. 3-seed Georgia Gwinnett 2-0 in the second half, but
Dustin Scibilia's 80
th-minute strike pulled CSUSM back within one. However, CSUSM could not find the equalizer.
After the season,
Erik Mueller and Kotselas were named
2013 NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athletes.
