Leasau’s Walk-Off Blast Propels Cougars to 16th Straight Win

Down by a run with two outs in the seventh, Tani Leasau launched a ball over the left field wall to sweep San Diego Christian.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif.— Thanks to late-game heroics by Tani Leasau, the Cal State San Marcos softball team extended its win streak to 16 games, sweeping San Diego Christian Tuesday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field.
The Cougars won both games 4-3, remaining undefeated at home (17-0-1) this season.

The teams battled closely in the first game, with the Cougars scoring twice late in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Hawks refused to back down, cutting the lead to 4-3 and loading the bases before Katie Wilkinson (17-2) induced a comebacker to end the game.

In the second game, it looked like San Diego Christian was going to be the first team to knock off the Cougars at home and end the second longest win streak in CSUSM history when the Hawks' Morgan McGee lined a two-run double to left center with two outs in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.

However, Leasau— the first athlete to arrive to the field to take batting practice three hours before the game — flipped the script with a no-doubt walk-off home run down the left field line that sent the Cougar dugout rushing onto the field.

In 402 games since the program began in 2007, there hadn't yet been a walk-off home run to win the game— until Tuesday.

With the victories, CSUSM improved to 29-3-1 on the season, and will look to obtain to a .900 winning percentage if they can record a pair of wins over Hope International Friday at the CSUSM Softball Field. San Diego Christian dropped to 14-12 with the pair of losses.

Game One
Holly Fauria drove in the game's first run with a groundout in the second inning, and advanced on a fielding error. She promptly stole second, allowing Olivia Lucatuorto to sneak home from third on the throw for a 2-0 lead after two.

An RBI double by the Hawks' Hannah Romanski cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth before the Cougars added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on Lucatuorto's RBI triple and a RBI groundout by Brogan Hoenisch to push the lead to 4-1 heading into the final inning.

San Diego Christian, who had tallied just two hits in the first six innings, stormed back with a final rally in the ninth with two runs on four hits, but Katie Wilkinson shut the door on the rally by stranding the bases loaded for her 17th win and 14th complete game.

Mallory Campbell reached base in all three plate appearances, and Kaitlin McGinley added another triple— her third of the season and 19th of her career— to add to her school record total.

Game Two
The second game got off to an ominous start when San Diego Christian took an early 1-0 lead in the first. The lead held up until the third inning, when Alex Miller beat out a throw to first base after a bobbled ball.

The Cougars broke through for the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Hoenisch to take a 2-1 edge.

The lead stood until the seventh inning, and the Hawks were down to their final batter when McGee appeared to push across the winning run with her two-run double for a 3-2 lead.

CSUSM regained life in the bottom of the seventh when Caylyn Rodriguez reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alex Miller.

However, Melyssa Bellamy's hard grounder was stopped by the Hawks pitcher Josie Tucker, who then threw out Rodriguez attempting to advance to third.

With two outs and Bellamy at first, Leasau took a first pitch strike before crushing a ball down the left field line that snuck inside the foul pole by about 10 feet, ending the game. The homerun was the third of the season for the sophomore, who went 3-for-4 on the game.

Ashley Dagenais earned the win and improved to 8-1, throwing a complete game five-hitter and striking out four, allowing just three runs.
