Cougars Win Wild One Over Eagles

Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team had a couple of big innings at the plate and took advantage of seven Biola errors in the Cougars' 17-11 victory on Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

Tyler Bernard went 3-for-5 with three RBI, Rich Montanez homered and Terrence Buchanan registered his second inside-the-park-homerun of the season. The Cougars have won six straight games and improve to 21-14 overall.

Biola drops to 11-32 overall. The Cougars are 4-1 against the Eagles this season.

A pair of errors by the Eagles gifted the Cougars their first four runs in the second inning. Bernard notched an RBI single and Buchanan added a two-run line drive through the left side. Brandon Bentson's blooper was mishandled by the Biola right fielder and Bernard scooted across to make it 4-0.

The Eagles had an answer in their next at-bat with four straight singles to lead off the inning. David McNeill cut the deficit in half with a two-run single up the middle and Biola appeared as if it was in business with runners on first and second with no one out.

However, CSUSM starter Kevin Hilton fanned Luke Klosek on a 3-2 pitch. McNeill took off to second on the play, apparently thinking there was a walk, and the Cougars caught him in no-man's land for the second out of the inning.

Still, Johnny Farrington singled in a third run on the last pitch of the day from Hilton. Kyle Kuck then came on to relieve Hilton and immediately picked off Farrington at first base.

Montanez led off the bottom of the third inning with a high fly ball over the right field wall to make it 5-3. Kory Smith launched an RBI double into the left-field corner and Bernard followed with a two-bagger down the same foul line, scoring Smith.

Then, Buchanan sent a hard single into center field. The ball skipped off Rob Groeschell's glove and rolled slowly to the fence. Bernard scored easily and Buchanan had the green light the rest of the way, speeding around all the bags to put CSUSM up 9-3.

Ray Patchen led off the fourth with a triple to right center and scored when Dylan Costello's grounder to the left side was misplayed by the third baseman. Smith delivered single that loaded the bases and Matt Arlington brought home courtesy-runner Noah Buchanan with a sacrifice fly.

Costello came across after the Biola catcher overthrew his pitcher to make it 12-3.

It appeared as though CSUSM would cruise the rest of the way, but Biola was able to put the first five batters of the inning aboard. McNeill ended Kuck's day with a bases-loaded walk before Klocek knocked a two-run single into center field off Matt Bataska (5-0).

Jimmy Gallarda's RBI single pulled the Eagles within 12-8. Three of Biola's runs in the frame were unearned.

The Cougars had an answer, as Bentson led-off with a walk before stealing second. Montanez knocked him in with a single down the right field line.

Smith then provided CSUSM some extra insurance with his second RBI double of the day, this one with two outs. Denny Vigo was caught at third base on the play for the final out of the inning, but CSUSM was comfortably ahead, 14-8. Smith and Vigo both had three hits on the day.

Biola made its last charge in the eighth with three runs to make it 14-11.

But, the Cougars answered with three runs in their turn at the plate to keep the game out of reach. Bernard recorded a sacrifice fly, while T. Buchanan and Bentson followed with RBI singles.

Buchanan also had three hits while adding three RBI. N. Buchanan scored three times.

The Cougars host La Sierra for a four-game series this Friday and Sunday, April 11 and 13, at CSUSM Baseball Field. Friday's doubleheader starts at 11:00 a.m. Sunday's first pitch will be at noon
