Game OneCSUSM starting pitcher
Hunter Brown worked his way out of a bases loaded jam with no outs to start the game, building some momentum right away for a Cougar team averaging 6.2 runs per game.
The Cougars tallied nearly half that total in the bottom half of the first with four hits, including RBI singles by
Ray Patchen and Vigo.
The Pioneers got one back in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1, but it could have been worse if not for a diving grab by the left fielder Costello.
Brown struck out the side in the third inning and the Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame, but were unable to get a run across.
Antelope Valley tied the score 3-3 in the fourth inning on a couple of unearned runs, but the Cougars responded right back with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth— all coming across as the result of a Pioneer error.
UAV cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth inning after a Pioneer runner forced into a pickle came around to score after the ball was dropped when applying a diving tag.
Brandon Bentson's sac fly later in the inning brought home
Matt Arlington, who led off with a double, and pushed the lead back up to three, where it stayed until the eighth inning.
Kyle Kuck came on to pitch 3 innings of scoreless relief, including 1-2-3 innings in both the sixth and seventh.
CSUSM tacked on four more runs on just one hit in the seventh after its patience at the plate led to three consecutive walks to start the inning. Costello smacked a two-run single to center to cap of the scoring at 11-4.
Matt Bataska (4-0) earned the win after allowing just an unearned run in two innings.
Justin Hertzmann closed the door with a perfect ninth inning.
Game TwoFacing the Antelope Valley ace Bobby Dias, who entered the game with a 6-0 record and a 1.74 ERA, the Cougars showed no signs of being intimidated, jumping all over the Pioneers by batting around the order in each of the first two innings, en route to a 12-0 lead after three innings.
The Cougars piled up six doubles and batted .500 on the game while starting pitcher
Addison Domingo (2-0) completely shut down the Pioneers, allowing just two hits and an unearned run over five innings, striking out four.
Buchanan and Bentson each had three hits, while
Brooks Noble, Vigo, and
Kory Smith each had multi-RBI games.
Clinton Perez finished off the series with two innings of work, allowing just two hits and a run on an inside the park homerun.
CSUSM will return to action Tuesday, April 8 for a 2:00pm game with Biola at the CSUSM Baseball Field.
