No. 5 Cougars Blank Antelope Valley on Senior Day

CSUSM wraps up home schedule with sweep of Antelope Valley 5-0 and 11-0.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif.— Playing in front of the Cougar faithful for the final time, five Cal State San Marcos seniors helped lead the Cougars to pair of victories over University of Antelope Valley Tuesday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field, winning 5-0 and 11-0.

Seniors Patricia Banda, Mallory Campbell, Brittney Guy, Kaitlin McGinley, and Alex Miller were each recognized before the game for their hard work, leadership, and role in helping the Cougars remain in the NAIA Top-10 for the entirety of their CSUSM careers.

After the mother's of each of the seniors threw out the ceremonial first pitch, it was all Cougars from that point forward, as Katie Wilkinson (19-3, 1.42 ERA) threw a complete game two-hit shutout while the Cougars got on the board early and often.

The seniors filled the 1-5 spots in the lineup, and Miller— CSUSM's career hits leader— knocked in the game's first run in the first inning, plating McGinley for the game's first run. McGinley had walked to lead off the game and stole second base for her CSUSM record 123rd steal.

CSUSM tacked on a few more runs in the third inning on RBI singles by Banda and Melyssa Bellamy, as well as a sacrifice fly by Olivia Lucatuorto.

The Cougars scored a final run in the fifth inning when Brogan Hoenisch's single to center field got past the pioneer outfielder, allowing Tani Leasau to race home for the fifth run.

Guy ended the game 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, and Miller went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

The second game turned into a rout quickly as the Cougars batted through the order with eight runs on nine hits in the first inning and three more runs in the second inning.

It was all the Cougars would need, as freshman Ashley Dagenais (10-2, 1.05) impressed once again with three scoreless innings, and Hayley Davis shut the door by mowing down all six batters she faced.

Miller had four RBI while senior speedsters McGinley and Banda each tripled in the game. For McGinley, it added one more to her CSUSM record in triples, giving her 20 in her career. Leasau went 2-for-2 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two runs.

The Cougars improved to 33-5-1 with the victories, and wrap up the regular season Friday with a doubleheader in Lancaster against the Pioneers.

Regardless of the outcome of Friday's games, CSUSM will be making yet another trip to the postseason, earning the No. 2 seed in the A.I.I. Tournament in Gwinnett, Ga. earlier in the afternoon. The Cougars will be looking to win their third conference crown, and first since 2012.
