CSUSM Completes Sweep of La Sierra, Matches Program’s Longest Winning Streak

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team registered a four-game sweep of La Sierra, 10-2 and 10-0, in a pair of seven-inning ballgames on Sunday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball.

The Cougars improve to 26-14 overall and run their winning streak to 11 games, a feat they've now accomplished twice this year. CSUSM won 11 straight between Feb. 15 and Mar. 16.

Game one starter Addison Domingo struck out seven batters in his first three innings, improving to 3-0 on the year while keeping a tidy 1.50 ERA. Terrence Buchanan was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, Denny Vigo doubled twice and the Cougars used a four-run, two-out rally in the fourth inning to pull away.

CSUSM celebrated Senior Day prior to game two, where Matt Bataksa, Tyler Bernard, Hunter Brown, Terrence Buchanan, Kevin Hilton, Kyle Kuck, Rich Montanez and Adam Tapia were honored for their years of service to the baseball program.

Bataska received the first start of the season and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. It was the only one surrendered by the Cougar staff on the afternoon. Bataska improved to 6-0 on the year.

Game One

Domingo registered another consistent outing and the Cougars pulled away early in a 10-1 win.

Ray Patchen's sacrifice fly to right field scored Buchanan to get the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the first.

Tyler Bernard's two-out, two-run double over the left fielder's head gave the Cougars a slight bit of breathing room in the second inning, 3-1.

Brooks Noble singled home Denny Vigo in the third to put the Cougars up three.

A two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth put the game out of reach. Buchanan blooped a two-out single into right center that scored Bernard to make it 5-2. He then stole second and third before scoring on Bentson's blooper to nearly the same exact spot.

Patchen dropped a single down the right field line and Bentson was able to score all the way from first when the ball kicked into the right field corner off a diving Daniel Rendon.

Vigo then tagged his second double of the game to the 375 sign to drive in Patchen and make it 8-2.

Domingo took care of business on the mound. He sat down the side in the first inning and combined to strikeout seven batters in his first three frames. He went 4.1 innings, finishing with eight strikeouts, four hits and no walks.

LSU loaded the bases in the fifth, but Steven Schafer forced Rico Alanis to groundout to end the threat.

Buchanan singled in Matt Arlington in the fifth.

Jake Trybulski cracked an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth that pushed the Cougars ahead by eight.

Game Two

The Cougars came out swinging and the pitching staffed combined for a one-hitter as the Cougars cruised 10-0 in game two, their seventh game in their last eight in which they've scored in double digits.

CSUSM started the contest with four straight singles off Luke Swartz (0-2). Bentson's two-run single scored Buchanan and Bernard to make it 2-0. Dylan Costello pushed another run across with an RBI groundout.

Buchanan popped a two-run triple to right center and scored on Bentson's sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.

Costello got into the act in the third inning, driving the first home run of his career over the left-field wall to put CSUSM up 8-0.

After a single by Kyle Kuck, Kevin Hilton worked a deep count before launching a triple off the base of the left-center field fence. The throw to try and get Hilton at third sailed into the dugout, and Hilton was granted a free pass to home to make it 9-0.

Hilton, usually a pitcher, started the game in center field, made a spectacular catch on a deep-fly ball in the second inning, scored twice and went 1-for-3 the first at-bats of his Cougar career.

Zach Tieger singled homed Trybulski in the fourth to make it 10-0.

Bentson, Hayden Weir and Clinton Perez worked the final three innings for CSUSM without surrendering a hit. It was the first action of the season on the rubber for Bentson.

Weir struck out two and Perez struck out Daniel Rendon to end the game.

The Cougars will face The Master's College in Santa Clarita on Wednesday, April 16 in a doubleheader at noon.
