GENEVA, Ohio—The Cal State San Marcos women's track and field team wrapped up the third and final day of the 2014 NAIA Indoor National Championships by recording scorers in three events, tallying nine team points total for a 23rd place team finish.
Junior
Brittany Hollie started off things Saturday for the Cougars with a 7
th place finish in the 60m hurdles, running 9.10 and scoring two points for the team in addition to earning her first NAIA All-American award. The top eight athletes in each event score points in a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 format, and all eight individuals are awarded NAIA All-America honors.
"It's extremely tough to run from the outside lane, but Brittany kept her focus and pulled together a solid performance," said head coach
Steve Scott. "She's in great position to have a standout outdoor season."
In the 3000m, the Cougars had two runners up near the front the entire way, with
Kelly Thompson grabbing the lead from the opening gun for 5-6 laps of the 10 lap race and teammate
Kate Bouvatte taking over for a few before eventual winner Rhianna Grossman of Carroll dropped the hammer in the final two laps.
Bouvatte and Thompson ended up placing 5
th and 6
th, respectively, with times of 10:06.44 and 10:06.76. The talented duo added a combined total of seven team points for CSUSM, giving them nine for the championships.
"It was a courageous race for Kelly— who has been banged up— to go for the win after training primarily in the pool and not running a step over the past two weeks," said Scott. "Kate ran a personal best and they both put together strong and gutsy races."
For Bouvatte, the All-America honors are a first for the junior after narrowly missing out in cross country and two days ago in this year's indoor championships after
anchoring the distance medley to a ninth place finish, just .02 seconds off a spot in the final.
Thompson wrapped up her CSUSM career with her seventh All-America honor— a CSUSM record. The distinguished senior was a three-time All-American in cross country, and recorded two apiece in indoor and outdoor track. She also was a key member of all three CSUSM National Champion cross country teams from 2009-2011, the only national titles in school history.
Thompson, a kinesiology major, is out of collegiate eligibility but Bouvatte and Hollie will continue on to compete for the Cougars in the outdoor track season. The Cougars next meets are at the Occidental Distance Carnival and the UCSD City Invitational next weekend.
