Game 1
The Cal State San Marcos offense was stagnant for the first six innings, but the Cougars rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to seal a come-from-behind victory over UAV in game one.
UAV knocked Brown (3-1) around in the first inning, combining for three runs on four hits. However, Brown bounced back to strikeout the side in the second frame on just 12 pitches.
He continued his steady performance, allowing just three more hits and no runs the rest of the way. He struck out a career-high 10 and didn't walk a batter in seven innings of work.Â
UAV starter Bobby Dias was equal to the task, keeping the Cougars off the board. He twice picked off baserunners in threatening situations and ended the day with seven strikeouts.
After six innings, he gave way for Mitchell Stroski, which proved to be UAV's undoing. Stroski immediately hit
Jon Putnam on his first pitch. Then, pinch-hitter
Kory Smith came on to draw an eight-pitch walk that put runners on first and second.
Buchanan broke the seal, as he laced a groundball through the left side to bring home
Noah Buchanan and make it 3-1. Stroski was pulled for Rudy Ramirez (2-2), but Ramirez didn't fair well either.
Tyler Bernard followed suit, sending a base-hit over the third baseman's head to bring home Smith and make it 3-2.
The Cougars then evened it up as Jonathan Ruiz could not handle Ramirez's next delivery. The ball careened off the backstop and T. Buchanan scampered across to make it 3-3.
Dylan Costello walked to put runners on the corners. Patchen then launched a ball into the left-field corner, clearing the bases with a two-run triple to make it 5-3.
Justin Hertzmann closed the deal for CSUSM, working the final two innings while striking out four for his fourth save of the season.
Game 2
Kyle Montiel (2-0) took the mound in the second game, striking out seven while allowing two runs on five hits for his first complete-game victory. T. Buchanan went 3-for-3 and scored four teims, while
Rich Montanez and Bentson recorded two hits each.
Bentson put the Cougars on the board in their first at-bat with a two-out single up the middle that scored T. Buchanan to make it 1-0
UAV answered back in the top of the second, as Brian Ebert knocked a two-out, two-run double into right center to put the Pioneers up 2-1.
T. Buchanan took it upon himself to pull CSUSM even. He singled through the right side before stealing second. He took third on a UAV passed ball and eventually scored on Patchen's groundout to the right side.
The tying run seemed to settle Montiel. The lanky lefty retired the side in order in the top of the fourth, striking out Travis Holm with a hanging curve on the outside of the plate to end the inning. He'd surrender just one hit the rest of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars loaded the bases on back-to-back singles and a hit batsman. Montanez's grounder to the right side drove in a runner to five CSUSM a 3-2 edge.
Adam Tapia then broke it open with a two-run double into the right field corner that made it 5-2.
CSUSM added two more in the bottom half of the sixth. T. Buchanan tripled down the right-field line to score Costello. Then, another passed ball allowed T. Buchanan to score from third and make it 7-2.
Bentson added a single and Montanez brought him all the way around with a triple down the right field line to for CSUSM's final run of the game.
Montiel worked a perfect seventh, forcing a pair of grounders and a weak pop out that ended the contest.
The Cougars will be back in action at CSUSM Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon when they take on Bethesda at 2:00 p.m.
