No. 7 CSUSM Buries Hope International 1-0, 6-1.

Cougars keep Royals hitters at bay en route to 14th consecutive win.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FULLERTON, Calif.— The red-hot Cal State San Marcos softball team extended its winning streak to 14 games and its unbeaten streak to 16 after a sweep of Hope International Friday afternoon at Fullerton College.

The Cougars received prime pitching performances from both Katie Wilkinson and Ashley Dagenais, allowing just one combined run on the day on eight hits.

Wilkinson started the first game with a complete game shutout, throwing seven innings of shutout softball to keep the Cougars in the game while they looked to get a run on the board.

CSUSM finally broke through in the sixth inning when Mallory Campbell drove home Alex Miller with a single through the left side of the infield to take a 1-0 lead.

That was all Wilkinson (16-2) would need, though the Royals threatened by loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Wilkinson induced a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop to end the game.

The second game started out more comfortably for the Cougars, as Tani Leasau ripped  a two-run double to right field before Dagenais ever took the circle.

In the third and fifth innings, Melyssa Bellamy tripled to bring home additional runs, giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead after five innings. Bellamy went 3-for-4 on the game and 4-for-7 on the day with a double to go along with her two triples.

After Caylyn Rodriguez' single opened up the lead to five in the sixth inning, Hope International got its first and only run of the day on a fielding error.

Olivia Lucatuorto pushed the lead back to five with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, and Dagenais (7-1) finished off the Royals without a threat for a complete game victory, allowing just three hits and striking out four.

With the wins, the Cougars improved to 27-3-1 on the year, while the Royals dropped to 12-18.

CSUSM will have a week off for spring break before returning back to action at home Tuesday, April 8 against San Diego Christian.
