Cougars Stifled by No. 5 San Diego Christian 6-1

Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos baseball team nearly matched No. 5 San Diego Christian in hits, but fell to the Hawks 6-1 Friday at the CSUSM Baseball Field.

The Cougars rapped seven hits off Hawks starter Mark Vasquez, who threw a complete game, but were only to get a single run across the plate in a 6-1 loss. CSUSM left eight runners on base, while San Diego Christian stranded just five.

It marked the fourth straight loss for the Cougars, who have cooled down slightly after an 11-game winning streak earlier in the month. In the last four games, CSUSM has just scored two runs while facing opponents ranked inside the NAIA Top-10.

After the Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off starter Kevin Hilton, the Cougars evened the score in the third inning after a Ray Patchen single brought home Terrance Buchanan.

The tie was short lived however, as the Hawks tacked on three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would never relinquish. San Diego Christian added two more runs in the eighth to end the scoring on the afternoon.

Hilton (3-3) went six innings in the loss, striking out four while allowing four runs on seven hits. Left Fielder Dylan Costello led the Cougars with two hits.

With the loss, CSUSM drops to 15-13 on the season, while San Diego Christian improved to 26-10.

The Cougars will look to end the four-game slide and take the series tomorrow as they host a doubleheader against the Hawks starting at 12:00pm.
