Box Score 2 SANTEE, Calif.— Continuing its stretch of hot play, the No. 7 Cal State San Marcos softball team improved its win streak to 12 games with a doubleheader sweep of San Diego Christian on Monday, winning 7-5 and 9-1.
The streak is the longest of the year and marks the team's longest since midway through the 2013 season, when the CSUSM won 13 straight games.
Despite traveling down to the south end of the county, the Cougars made themselves at home at the plate, scoring 16 runs in 14 innings, backed by six RBI from second baseman
Olivia Lucatuorto.
It didn't take long for CSUSM to make its mark, as the Cougars plated two in the first inning on a RBI groundout and a two-out RBI single by
Tani Leasau.
Brenna Parker crushed her fourth homerun of the season in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead— a solo shot that tied her for the team homerun lead with
Melyssa Bellamy.
Alex Miller added another run in the fifth with a single to left field, and
Olivia Lucatuorto ripped a double down the left field line to bring home two more runs, giving CSUSM a 6-0 run heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Katie Wilkinson (13-2) had been cruising in the pitching circle until that point, but gave up four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Hawks were able to capitalize on miscues to inch their way back.
Bellamy dropped a RBI bunt single for an insurance run in the seventh and San Diego Christian rallied for one more run and put the tying run at the plate with two outs, but Wilkinson closed out the game by inducing a flyout to center field.
Wilkinson went the distance, throwing seven innings and allowing one earned run on six hits, striking out five.
Kaitlin McGinley and
Alex Miller each had a pair of steals in the game.
The second game started out with a scoreless first inning, but CSUSM scored in every inning after that en route to a more drama-free 9-1 victory.
Lucatuorto got the Cougars on the scoreboard first with a two-run homerun to left center field, her second homerun of the season. She drove home a run in both the fourth and sixth innings as well, giving her four RBI on the game and six on the day.
Ashley Dagenais (5-1) continued to be sharp on the mound, hurling a complete game five-hitter, allowing just one run. As a team, CSUSM pounded out 13 hits against the Hawks in game two.
Leadoff hitter McGinley went 2-for-4 with another two stolen bases, giving her four on the afternoon. CSUSM's career leader in swiped bags now has 115 in her career in just 120 attempts, good for a remarkable 95.8 percent success rate.
With the wins, CSUSM improved to 22-3-1 on the season, while San Diego Christian dropped to 10-8 with the losses.
The Cougars will look to continue their streak Thursday as they host a tough Vanguard squad that sits just outside the NAIA Top-25. The first pitch of the doubleheader will take place at 2:00pm.
