Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Kevin Hilton pitched a complete game and the No. 16 Cal State San Marcos baseball team walked off in unlikely fashion in a 3-2 victory over Bethesda on Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth,
Brandon Bentson led-off with a single to center field before giving way to pinch-runner
Noah Buchanan. In an attempt to move Buchanan into scoring position,
Rich Montanez laid a sacrifice bunt down in front of the mound.
BUC starter Drew Hammond fielded the ball, but his teammate was late to the bag and the throw sailed down the right-field line. Buchanan didn't break stride and came all the way around to score before Andrew Camacho's tag.
The Cougars have won eight games in a row and improve to 11-8 overall. BUC drops to 8-21.
Hilton allowed just five hits and no walks while striking out seven. Four of the 18 balls put in play against him were groundouts. Hammond worked every inning for the Flames and also allowed five hits.
The game's first hit came in the top of the fourth inning, as
Tyler Bernard led-off with a double down the left-field line.
Dylan Costello followed suit, doubling to nearly the exact same spot to put the Cougars up 1-0. Costello eventually reached third base with one out, but was tagged out on a grounder by Montanez.
BUC answered in its next at-bat. Daniel Juarez registered an RBI triple before coming in on Bobby Romero's base hit. The Cougars escaped the inning down one on a brilliant double-play combination between
Terrence Buchanan and Bernard.
T. Buchanan started the bottom of the sixth with a triple to left center and CSUSM put runners on the corners via a walk to Bernard. T. A wild pitch allowed T. Buchanan to score and make it 2-2.
A walk to
Dylan Costello and a free pass to Montanez loaded the bases, but Hammond forced
Denny Vigo into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
BUC put runners on first and second in the top of the ninth inning, but Hilton got Camacho to ground one to Bernard at short, who flipped it over to T. Buchanan.
It is the second complete-game in a row delivered by a Cougar pitcher.
Kyle Montiel dealt one of his own, of the seven-inning variety, on Saturday in an 8-2 game-two win over Antelope Valley.
Hunter Brown struck out 10 in game one against UAV.
CSUSM takes on Biola tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in La Mirada. The Cougars next home series is Sunday and Monday, March 16 and 17, a four-game set against Sioux Falls.
