No. 16 CSUSM Drops Pair to No. 22 San Diego Christian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 16 Cal State San Marcos baseball team fell 9-2 and 7-6 to No. 22 San Diego Christian in a doubleheader on Saturday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

The Cougars drop to 3-7 overall, while SDCC improves to 10-2.

CSUSM was playing as the away team on its home field due to the game being moved from El Cajon to San Marcos earlier in the week.

The Cougars' offensive struggles continued in the first game as CSUSM was only able to muster a run in the third and one in the fourth. Ray Patchen drove in Terrence Buchanan to make it 4-1 before a sacrifice fly from Buchanan scored Denny Vigo to make it 5-2.

SDCC came out with three runs in its first at-bat, thanks in part to an error by the Cougars and a wild pitch.

Michael Stowers homered in the fifth to make it 6-2 in favor of the Hawks.

The Hawks essentially put the game away with two runs in the seventh, one off a bases-loaded walk.

Starter Hunter Brown (1-1) went two and a third innings, striking out two while giving up four earned runs. Kyle Montiel struck out four batters in two and two-thirds innings of work.

The Cougars had a chance to tie the game in their final at-bat of game two after trailing by as many as five, but fell a run short to drop their third game in a row.

Down 6-1 in the top of the fourth, Dylan Costello doubled and Kyle Hansen walked to put two runners aboard. Adam Tapia's grounder was mishandled by the SDCC shortstop and Costello came across.

Tyler Bernard singled to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Hansen to take home, but Tapia would be called out for interference.

John Swilley singled to keep the two-out rally alive, moving Bernard to third. Patchen then came through with his second RBI of the day with an infield single to make it 6-4.

SDCC answered with another run in the bottom of the fourth.

Needing three runs to keep the game alive in their final at-bat, Bentson led-off with a single before Brooks Noble put runners on second and third with a one-out double to left.

Another wild pitch allowed Bentson to score, making it 7-5 with one out and Noble on third.

Costello brought in Noble with a sacrifice fly to right center, pulling CSUSM within 7-6.

Head coach Dennis Pugh then called on CSUSM homerun leader Rich Montanez to pinch-hit with two outs and no one aboard, but the SDCC closer forced the Cougars' everyday catcher to ground out and end the contest.

Buchanan and Patchen were making their respective season debuts for CSUSM.

The Cougars will play a three-game set against Biola next Friday and Saturday, February 14 and 15. CSUSM and Biola will play a single game in La Mirada on Friday at 2:00 p.m. before coming to San Marcos on Saturday for a doubleheader at CSUSM Baseball Field at 11:00 a.m.

Saturday's doubleheader will feature appearances by the San Diego Padres' Friar and the Pad Squad. In addition to a day of free baseball, fans will have the opportunity to win great prizes including Padres' gear, autographed items and game tickets.
