No. 16 CSUSM Quieted in Loss to Chapman

Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Two of the first four Chapman batters homered, foreshadowing what was to come in the No. 16 Cal State San Marcos baseball team's 13-2 loss to the Panthers on Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

CU (1-0) scored three runs in each of its first two at-bats before adding four in the fifth to essentially put the game out of reach.

CSUSM  (3-5), which outscored its opponents 35-4 over its last three, managed five hits and snapped a three-game winning streak.

The Panthers led 1-0 after one batter; leadoff hitter Adam Velez took Justin Hertzmann's (0-3) 2-2 pitch over the left field wall. After a single by Mark Saatzer, Tyler Cook sent another ball out to left that put the Panthers up three.

Saatzer then made it 6-0 in the second inning with a three-run, bases-loaded double to left center.

The Cougars attempted to claw back in it in the bottom of the third, as Tyler Bernard doubled-home Dylan Costello. Later in the at-bat, Brandon Bentson sent a groundball to the right side that was mishandled by the second baseman, allowing Bernard to score.

6-2 would be the closest the Cougars would come, as CSUSM could not force in another run off the CU staff.

Justin Hanks (1-0) started for Chapman, allowing just two hits. Ben Vietze, Wyatt Hahn, Matt Smith, Matt Molnar and Taber Watson all saw action for the Panthers.

Cook notched a two-run triple and Connor Battaglia drove in a run before scoring on an error to make it 10-2 CU in the fifth. Cook added his fifth RBI an inning later on a single up the middle that scored Andrew Carbajal.

Andrew Mulato hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to account for the final two Panther runs.

Bernard went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for CSUSM. John Swilley, Denny Vigo and Costello were the other Cougars to tally hits.

CSUSM returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 8 against San Diego Christian at CSUSM Baseball Field. The doubleheader was originially scheduled to be played in El Cajon, but due to field issues, the game has been moved to CSUSM. The Cougars
