CLAREMONT, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos men's track and field team got its first chance to compete in 2014, while the women's team completed its first outdoor race Saturday afternoon at the Rossi Relays. Despite it being very early in the season, several Cougars were able to record strong marks.

Women
100m hurdler Brittany Hollie wasted no time to book her ticket to the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama, running 14.48 seconds to hit the NAIA "A" standard and win easily by .55 seconds. The junior from Helix High School will also be competing in the 60m hurdles in the NAIA Indoor National Championships March 6-8 in Geneva, Ohio.

Also recording a strong season opener Saturday was freshman Jashell Smith, who recorded the best shot put by a CSUSM thrower since Allison Ogilvie in 2011.

Men
Maurice Strickland ran a blazing time in the 110m hurdles, recording a personal best of 14.30 to win the competition. More impressively, his time would have been the fourth fastest mark in all the NAIA last season.

The men's 4x400 relay, which finished fourth at the NAIA National Championships last year, won the competition in 3:18.61, edging out USC by over a second. The men's distance medley finished second overall in 10:16.97, behind only Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

In the discus, Josh Maffei placed second overall with a toss of 137 feet, 10 inches, which was the best mark for a CSUSM discus thrower since 2008.

Both the men's and women's team will compete next in their only home meet of the year March 1 at the Mangrum Invitational held on the CSUSM campus. The Mangrum Invitational is open for the public to compete. For a complete time schedule and more information on entering, please click here
