Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – Cassie Damyanovich scored a game-high 22 points and the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team earned its third win in its last four games with a 74-65 victory over Concordia (Calif.) on Thursday evening at CU Arena.
The games stayed tight before an 8-0 run by the Cougars midway through the second half put a gap between the squads. CUI could not come up with stops and CSUSM was happy to trade baskets down the stretch.
CSUSM improves to 12-17 overall. CUI drops to 10-13.
Damyanovich registered her highest scoring output since Dec. 6, going 8-of-17 from the floor while adding four rebounds and three assists.
Heather Thompson was 6-of-9 and tallied 16 points.
Brianna Higgins came off the bench to contribute seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.
CUI led by as much as six early on, but the Cougars caught back up and eventually took a four-point lead on
Sherika Miller's layup and a free throw by Higgins, 22-18, with 3:38 left in the first half.
Back-to-back layups by Thompson made it 29-24. However, Brittany Stafford answered with a late bucket to pull the Eagles within three at the break.
Down by one at the 16:07 mark, CSUSM put together an 8-0 stretch over a 2:09 stretch to take a 46-39 lead.
MacKenzie Harnett hit a baseline jumper to give the Cougars the lead and Thompson followed with a fade away.
Miller then kicked a pass to an open Damyanovich for a jumper before Damyanovich made a pair of free shots to push the lead to seven.
CUI did well to trade baskets with the Cougars to stay within two possessions, but another run by the Cougars, this one a 10-2 stretch, gave CSUSM a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
The Cougars end the regular season on Saturday night at MiraCosta College against UC Santa Cruz at 7:30 p.m. Senior
Sherika Miller will be honored for her years of service to the team prior to the contest.
