Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. – The No. 16 Cal State San Marcos baseball team took an early 2-0 lead, but could not keep pace with Biola in a 10-3 loss on Friday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.
Ross Lemmel's RBI single in the second and
Brandon Bentson's RBI base-knock gave the Cougars reason to be optimistic, but BU tied it up in the third before adding two in the fifth and four in the seventh to blow the contest open.
CSUSM drops to 3-8 overall with the loss while BU improves to 6-9.
The teams will finish out their three-game set tomorrow with a doubleheader at CSUSM Baseball Field starting at 11:00 a.m. The Cougars will be hosting
Padres at the Park, where fans will have opportunities to win San Diego Padres tickets, gear, autographed items and more, in addition to meeting Padre great Garry Templeton. Guests entering the facility will receive either a Chase Headley bobblehead or Yonder Alonso replica jersey.
Bentson led off the second inning with a single and the Cougars were able to put runners on first and third with two out. Lemmel singled up the middle to bring in Bentson to make it 1-0.
In CSUSM's next at-bat,
Dylan Costello walked and
Ray Patchen was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Bentson brought in Costello with a single to right center to make it 2-0 and the Cougars looked as though they were in business with a pair of runners aboard and one out.
However, BU's Sean Rothfuss forced
Denny Vigo into an inning-ending double play to escape with just a run against in the frame.
The Eagles answered in their next at-bat, as Michael Anunziata and Boone Farrington each notched RBI doubles to make it 2-2.
Kevin Hilton came on in relief of CSUSM starter
Kyle Montiel to get out of the jam with the game still tied, but Hilton would run into some trouble in the fifth.
Anunziata slapped home Johnny Farrington to make it 3-2 and Hilton was pulled after a walk that put runners on first and second with one out. But, reliever
Aaron Alva could not find the plate and walked the next two batters, the latter of which resulted in a run for Biola.
Matt Bataska came in for Alva and forced an inning-ending double play, or else the damage would have been much worse.
It appeared as though the Cougars finally got to Rothfuss in the seventh inning, but CSUSM would come up with nothing despite loading the bases with one out.
Matt Arlington tagged Rothfuss for a one-out triple down the left field line and Rothfuss was immediately subbed for Sage Poland. However, Poland fared a bit like Alva and walked the only two batters he faced.
Bryan Castelli came in for BU and subsequently forced Bentson to pop out to shallow center. He then drew Patchen into an easy groundball that got the Eagles out of the frame unscathed.
Leading 4-2 with momentum on their side after getting out of a squeeze, the Eagles poured it on in their half of the seventh, combining for four hits and four runs off Bataska and
Justin Hertzmann. The two runs given up by Hertzmann were unearned due to a Cougar fielding error and credited to Bataska.
Rich Montanez drove in Bentson with a sacrifice fly to center field in the eighth that made it 8-3.
Bentson accounted for half of the Cougars' hits and finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs.
Hilton (0-1) was credited with the loss, Rothfuss (2-1) the win.
