CSUSM Cleans Up at Best of the West Invitational

No. 8 Cougars sweep three NCAA Division II opponents by a combined score of 24-0.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 TURLOCK, Calif.— The No. 8 Cal State San Marcos softball team rolled to three shutout wins Saturday— including two mercy-rule victories—in the first day of the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The Cougars knocked off Chico State 8-0 to start the day before taking down San Francisco State 9-0 and closing out the day with a 7-0 victory over Holy Names.

Competing as the only NAIA team in the eight team field, the Cougars did far more than just hold their own. Katie Wilkinson picked up a pair of victories in the circle and Mallory Campbell went 6-for-8 on the afternoon to lead the way.

With the victories, CSUSM improves to 5-0 to start the season. The Cougars will face Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Monterey Bay at 10:00am and 12:15pm Sunday to complete the invitational.

Game 1: CSUSM 8- Chico State 0 (5 inn.)
After two innings of scoreless ball against the Wildcats, the Cougars broke through in the third inning with an RBI single by Caylyn Rodriguez and and RBI groundout by Kaitlin McGinley to put CSUSM up 2-0 after three.

In the fourth inning, the Cougars blew the game open. Olivia Lucatuorto singled up the middle and brought in two runs to extend the lead to four, and Mallory Campbell and Alex Miller each brought in another run to increase the lead to six.

Katie Wilkinson closed out the bottom of the fourth with a 1-2-3 inning, giving the Cougars four innings of two-hit softball. RBI singles by Melyssa Bellamy and Campbell pushed the score to 8-0 in the fifth inning, giving CSUSM enough of gap to end the game via mercy rule. Hayley Davis pitched a perfect inning to seal the win.

CSUSM pounded out 10 hits in total and stole four bases.

Game 2: CSUSM 9- San Francisco State 0 (5 inn.)
The senior All-American duo of Kaitlin McGinley and Alex Miller each racked up three hits, and Katie Wilkinson was again on her game, throwing four shutout innings without walking a batter to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Cougars scored twice in the second inning, with their first run coming on a double steal from Breana Reyes and Taylor Peters, and McGinley made it 2-0 with her first of two doubles against the Gators.

The game remained tight until the fifth inning, when the Cougars exploded with seven runs on nine hits, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Caylyn Rodriguez. Hayley Davis once again finished off the game without allowing a hit.

Game 3: CSUSM 7- Holy Names 0
Brenna Parker (1-0) threw a complete game gem, allowing just two hits and two walks while recording three strikeouts to earn her first win as a Cougar.

After three innings of scoreless softball, CSUSM got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Brogan Hoenisch singled up the middle to drive in two runs, and later scored on a Caylyn Rodriguez single to make it 3-0.

CSUSM tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning on another Rodriguez single and a two-RBI single by Kaitlin McGinley. Parker added an insurance run of her own with a sac fly to make it 7-0.

CSUSM tallied nine hits in the game-- the team's fewest of the day but equal to the amount of hits Cougar pitchers allowed in all three games Saturday combined. CSUSM recorded 34 hits on the day in total.
