SAN DIEGO – A pair of spirited comeback efforts were not quite enough for the Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team as Point Loma held on for a 75-68 win Tuesday night in Golden Gymnasium.
Senior
Cassie Damyanovich scored a season-high 28 points and tied her own school record of six buckets from beyond the arc. Senior
Heather Thompson tallied her fourth double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Junior
Brianna Higgins added 11 points.
A Damyanovich steal and layup with eight second on the clock knotted the game 32-32 at the half.
The Lions opened the second half with a 7-0 run in the first minute. The Cougars charged back and took the lead on a pair of free throws by Higgins just under the eight-minute mark.
The CSUSM lead was short lived as PLNU's Paola Roa converted a Cougar turnover into a layup. The Sea Lions would go on short spurts, reaching as high as a 10-point lead with the Cougars continually trying to close the gap.
CSUSM's final push came on a Damyanovich three-pointer with 27 seconds remaining to make it 72-68. The Sea Lions went 3-of-4 from charity line in the final 23 seconds to clinch the win.
CSUSM (1-8) travels up to the Bay Area for a match-up against Menlo College on Saturday, Dec. 13. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
