A.I.I. ImplicationsCSUSM currently sits No. 3 in the Conference/Unaffiliated/A.I.I. Group Poll, so if the season were to end today, the Cougars would hold the No. 3-seed for the A.I.I. Conference Championship, Nov. 14-15 in Clinton, Iowa. University of Houston-Victoria currently is in the No. 4 spot, which would be the final seed in the tournament. On the outside looking in is JWU, along with Kentucky Christian (9-5), Rochester College (8-5), West Virgina Tech (14-1-1) and Washington Adventist (Md.) (7-6-1). A win by the Wildcats Saturday would not only help JWU's cause, but these four other schools as well.
Just a Bit OutsideThe Cougars narrowly missed being included in the NAIA Top 25 for the fourth consecutive week, the national office announced Tuesday. The Cougars received 60 total points in the poll and came in at No. 28. CSUSM had been No. 27 in the last two Top 25 Polls.
Acting SullyScoreless for six games from Sept. 3-17, senior forward
Sullivan Tobin has snapped out of it. The Concord-native has scored five times over his last six games, and he netted the Cougars' first goal in their most recent 4-2 victory over Bethesda. Tobin now has a team-high six scores this season, tied for the fourth-most in a single season in program history. It's also the most goals in a single season for any Cougar player since
Eric Lopez and
Scott Rice scored six as freshmen in 2011.
Mora Lending AgencyAngel Mora continued his streak of consecutive matches with at least one assist, running it to seven games after a two-assist performance in CSUSM's win over Bethesda last Saturday. Mora has dealt out 10 assists with three multi-assist performances over those seven matches. He has already set the Cougar single-season record for assists – currently with a total of 11 – and he has the fourth-most assists in the NAIA. In addition, Mora's 12 career assists are already tied for the school record, and he's done it in less than two seasons on campus.
Record WatchA couple of CSUSM players are near the top of the CSUSM record books with just three games remaining in the regular season. With 17 career goals, Lopez needs two more to tie Bradley Seidenglanz's (2006-07, 2009-10) career record of 19. In addition, Lopez needs four points to tie Seidenglanz's career points record of 49. Rice isn't far behind, sitting third in each category with 15 goals and 34 points, respectively.
Zach Sheppard needs one more save to break the saves record of 103 currently held by Kevin Ernst (2008-10). Sheppard also needs one more shutout to break Ernst's career record of 13.
Johnson & Wales PreviewAll-time record vs. JWU: First meeting
JWU Breakdown: The Wildcats have had a rough go of it in the latter part of October. Since back-to-back wins Oct. 5 and 12 over Carroll College and Mount Marty moved its record to 6-5-2, JWU has dropped three straight one-goal games to Great Falls, Our Lady of the Lake and The Master's College. Ben Flannery Bartlett leads all scorers with six on the season and is coming off a two-goal performance against Our Lady of the Lake. Goalkeeper Trevor Shepherd ranks 29
th in the NAIA with 71 total saves.
Senior Day, Nov. 1After the Cougars play JWU, CSUSM hosts Antelope Valley (Nov. 1, 1 p.m.) and Point Loma (Nov. 4, 3:30 p.m.) to round out the regular season. Next Saturday's match against UAV will be the Cougars' Senior Day, and CSUSM will honor nine seniors for their years of service to the men's soccer program:
Diego Fontes,
Sullivan Tobin,
Erik Mueller,
Alex Jaziri,
Angel Mora,
Mason Grimes,
Eric Lopez,
Scott Rice,
Evan Myers,
Anthony Fischer and
Chris Higley.
