No. 16 CSUSM Continues Sluggish Start with 4-2 Loss to Bethesda

Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. –The No. 16 Cal State San Marcos baseball team is still looking for its first win after a 4-2 loss to Bethesda on Wednesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

Andrew Camacho's two-run single in the top of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 stalemate and helped the Flames improve to 3-7 overall.

The loss drops CSUSM to 0-4 to start the season. The Cougars haven't started the season 0-4 since their debut season in 2007, when the team started 0-7.

After the teams played five and a half scoreless innings, Brandon Bentson's sacrifice fly to the right field warning track drove home Tyler Bernard, making it 1-0 in favor of CSUSM in the sixth.

CSUSM starter Kevin Hilton put together a solid outing in his first start of the season, allowing just four hits through his first six innings. However, BUC took advantage of the first opportunity it had on him in the seventh.

Pinch-hitter Mario Gonzalez was called on to face Hilton with runners on first and second and two outs. Gonzalez connected with a pitch off the end of the bat that skidded along the first-base line. The ball bounced past Bentson at first and the Cougar defense seemed to stop on the play as it was unclear whether or not the umpire had ruled foul or fair.

The umpire clearly yelled "fair" the second time, but it was too late for CSUSM, as both BUC runners came around to score and give the Flames a 2-1 lead.

Hilton would retire the next batter and finish the day with six strikeouts and six hits against him in seven innings of work.

Rich Montanez led-off the Cougar half of the seventh with a double, his third extra-base hit of the season. Jon Putnam then tied it back up for the Cougars, singling to left to bring home courtesy runner Kyle Hansen.

Justin Hertzmann (0-2) struck out his first batter in relief of Hilton in the top of the eighth. But the next three Flame hitters would connect with hits, capped off by Camacho's two-run laser up the middle.

Down by two, the Cougars were able to put the tying run on second base in the bottom half of the eighth. John Swilley walked before moving to third on Bentson's bloop single. Swilley advanced to third on the play and Bentson took second base on the throw over to third.

However, BUC reliever Joshua Perez (1-0) settled down to strike out CSUSM designated hitter Denny Vigo before getting Montanez to ground out to the shortstop to end the threat.

The Cougars put the tying run aboard and the winning run at the plate again in their last at bat. Kyle Kuck was given life when the BUC shortstop could not handle his two-out groundball. Adam Tapia came through with a single up the middle, putting runners on the corners.

Unfortunately, leadoff batter Tyler Bernard could not make the comeback happen, as BUC closer Gerardo Cortez, Jr. (1) sat him down swinging to end the game.

The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow at noon with a single game vs. Simpson at CSUSM Baseball Field. Fans who are unable to attend can watch the game live.
