Box Score ESCONDIDO, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team picked up its fifth straight win Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Eagles in straight sets 25-9, 25-15, 25-20 at home.
The Cougars hit .381 on the match and recorded 10 service aces while improving to 4-0 on their homestand, and 5-1 at home on the season. Freshman
Rachel Hadley recorded a double-double for the second straight game with 11 kills and 11 digs, and reigning
NAIA Player of the Week Taylor DeGraaf added 11 kills of her own and seven digs.
"I thought we came out strong and played a very well executed, balanced match," said head coach
Andrea Leonard. "We have players really stepping up and filling roles for us that are really valuable to the team. There was a lot of unselfish play and team camaraderie, as well as players coming off the bench making an impact for us."
The Cougars pounced on the Eagles early, roaring out to a 7-0 lead and taking 14 of the match's first 16 points. Embry-Riddle never held a lead in a set until the third frame, in which they never led by more than a point.
CSUSM received big contributions from several players Saturday.
Markisha Henderson-Diaz added seven kills at a .462 clip, and libero
Kelli McLin had nine digs and three service aces.
Alyssa Foster was solid and precise in setting up attackers, recording 30 assists and picking up two kills and two service aces.
Also noteworthy was the return of freshman
Morgan Willis, who hasn't played since the opening day of the season due to injury. Willis picked up two kills and four blocks in a short period of time, sparking the Cougars up front.
CSUSM improved to 18-7 on the season with the victory, while Embry-Riddle dropped to 3-7. The Cougars will wrap up their homestand and look for their sixth straight win Tuesday evening against La Sierra at 8:00pm. After that, Cal State San Marcos will have a chance to square off against No. 1 Concordia (Calif.) on the road Thursday in Irvine.
