CSUSM Rallies to Defeat William Jessup

Cougars improve to 3-0 on homestand with four set victory over Warriors.

Box Score ESCONDIDO, Calif.—The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team finished off a busy week with an 18-25, 25-8, 25-21, 25-14 victory over William Jessup Saturday afternoon at Escondido High School. For the Cougars, it was their third home win this week after defeating No. 9 Westmont Tuesday and UC Merced Friday night.

Taylor DeGraaf was exceptional as usual, recording 22 kills and 16 digs while Erin Talafus added 11 kills and four blocks. Freshman Rachel Hadley reached 10 in kills for the first time at CSUSM and also tallied a career best 13 digs en route to picking up her first career double-double. Hadley also set a career high with four blocks, while fellow freshman Markisha Henderson-Diaz added a career best five blocks and nine kills.

The Cougars started off a little sluggish in dropping the first set, but roared back with a commanding second set to regain control and gain the upper hand. CSUSM still hit the ball well in the first set, but allowed the Warriors to hit .395 against them (19 kills, 2 errors, 43 attempts) before making adjustments.

CSUSM held William Jessup to a .000 hitting percentage the rest of the way, including forcing more errors than kills allowed in both the second and third sets. The Cougars pressure up front not only contributed to 11 team blocks, but to many attacking errors as well.

Libero Kelli McLin topped her career best in digs with 27, finishing just one shy of Nichole May's school record of 28 in a four-set match. Alyssa Foster led the Cougars in digs with 46, and chipped in seven digs and two kills.

The Cougars improved to 17-7 with the victory, while William Jessup fell to 2-13. CSUSM will have a week to rest before their next game, which will be a 1:00pm matchup vs Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at home.
