Box Score 2 COSTA MESA, Calif.— The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team wrapped up play in the Vanguard University Tournament Saturday with a three set loss to the host Lions before closing out the day with a straight set victory over La Sierra.
Facing the 19
th ranked Lions in their first match of the day, the Cougars came out of the gates slowly, dropping the first set 25-14 and recording eight kills and nine errors, earning a negative hitting percentage in a set for the first time all season.
CSUSM made adjustments in the second and third sets, and were tied 23-23 in both sets before dropping the final two points of each. In all, the Cougars hit just .033 on the match— its lowest total in school history.
Taylor DeGraaf led the Cougars with nine kills,
Alyssa Foster had a game high 23 assists, and
Kelli McLin led all CSUSM players with 21 digs on the match, just one below her career best set Friday against Biola.
Despite the tough afternoon, the Cougars were able to turn things around in the afternoon against their former A.I.I. rival La Sierra, winning 25-14, 25-20, 27-25. CSUSM rebounded to hit .609 (15 kills, 1 error, 23 attempts) in the first set en route to a .349 hitting percentage on the match. On the other end, the Cougars held the Golden Eagles to just a .155 hitting percentage over the three sets.
DeGraaf once again led CSUSM with 16 kills and added 13 digs, while
Alyssa Hubbard tacked on 12 kills of her own. McLin led the team in digs for the third straight game with 14, and Foster had a game high 42 assists setting up the potent Cougar attack.
After the conclusion of play Saturday, CSUSM now stands at 14-7 on the year. The Cougars will face No. 9 Westmont at home Tuesday in the first game of a three game homestand. CSUSM also hosts UC Merced Friday and William Jessup on Saturday this week.
