Box Score
PASADENA, Calif.— Despite the warm and muggy temperatures and it being the first game of the year, the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team didn't look the part of a sluggish team in their season opener, dominating Cal Tech in all areas of the game from start to finish. The Cougars outshot the Beavers 23-3 en route to a 5-0 victory Saturday.
The Cougars put Cal Tech goalkeeper John David Feist to the test early, putting five shots on goal within the first 23 minutes, finally breaking through after a cross from the left side by Dustin Scibilia that was squared away into the back of the net by Jacob Stolmeier.
The score remained 1-0 until halftime, but in the 47th minute the Cougars added another goal on a cross to the top of the box from Eric Lopez that was driven home under the crossbar by Diego Fontes. Fontes, a junior transfer from La Sierra, blasted another ball into the upper corner of the net in the 68th minute from about 25 yards out to give CSUSM a 3-0 lead.
Luka Stevanovic joined in the mix in the 77th minute, ripping a cross from the right side past the keeper with a volley from about 8 yards out, and Alex Jaziri capped off the scoring with a drive from 15 yards out that banged off the right post and in.
"It was real hot, really muggy— a tough day to play soccer but we got the results," said head coach Ron Pulvers. "We scored some brilliant goals, got a shutout from Zach Sheppard and the defense. We're really happy about it. Some of the goals we scored today were top-level, it was unbelievable."
Zach Sheppard made two saves for his fourth career shutout. CSUSM starts the year off at 1-0, and will face Hope International in their home opener Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
