Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif.—The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team fell in a tight five set match in its tournament opener Thursday against Concordia (Ore.) at the Biola/ Red Lion Hotel-Anaheim Summer slam, but rebounded back to sweep William Jessup in straight sets.
The Cougars fell 22-25, 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 13-15 against the Cavaliers despite 22 kills and 30 digs from 2012 A.I.I. Player of the Year
Taylor DeGraaf, who finished just two digs shy of the school single game record. Also playing large on the defense end was libero Waverly Richards, who made her collegiate debut a memorable one with 24 digs of her own.
Alyssa Foster nearly bested her own school record for assists with 56, falling four short of her career best, and chipped in 18 digs and seven kills in 14 attempts. However, the most efficient scorer for Cal State San Marcos was
Erin Talafus, who hit .526 with 11 kills and one error in 19 attempts.
Brooke Butler chimed in with 12 kills and nine digs, falling just a dig short of her first career double-double.
After dropping the first set, the Cougars rallied back to take the next two, with
Taylor Harris coming up with a clutch service ace to clinch the second set and Butler closing out the third with a kill from Foster.
After falling behind 14-6 early in the fourth set, CSUSM rallied to tie the score at 18-18, but were unable to close out the set for the victory. In the fifth, the Cougars found themselves down again early 8-3, but tightened the gap to 14-13 before Concordia's Brianna Hogan ended the match with a kill.
The Cougars came out of the gates ready to pounce against William Jessup, not looking the part of a team who just suffered a tough five set defeat, and ran away with all three sets.
DeGraaf once again led the team in kills with 15 in 22 attempts, recording just three errors for an impressive .545 hitting percentage. As a team, the Cougars hit .409 on the match, making it just the second time in school history that CSUSM has hit above .400. The Cougars hit .434 in 2012 against Mayville State at the A.I.I. Conference Tournament.
"It was a great day of competition," said head coach
Andrea Leonard. "This morning was a good test for us to see where we are and what we need to work on. We fought hard against a solid Concordia team, and we were able to continue to adjust and put things together in the afternoon for a decisive win."
CSUSM now stands at 3-1 on the season, and faces Southern Oregon at 9:00 am and Davenport (Mich.) tomorrow at 3:00 pm to close out play in the Biola Summer Slam. Both opponents are receiving votes in the NAIA poll. Fans can follow the action live via video stream or live stats at the
