SECAUCUS, N.J. – Cal State San Marcos right-hander
James Dykstra was taken in the sixth round by the Chicago White Sox in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft on Friday.
Dykstra, who went 16-6 with a 2.46 career ERA with the Cougars, was selected with the 183
rd overall pick. He became the sixth player chosen by the White Sox in this year's draft, and the fourth pitcher.
He is CSUSM's highest draft pick in the program's seven-year history and the third CSUSM player selected, joining Johnny Omahen (Florida Marlins, 35
th round, 2011) and
Anthony Renteria (39
th round, 2012).
Dykstra, out of nearby Rancho Bernardo High School, was drafted in the 50
th round in 2010 by the Colorado Rockies, but chose instead to attend LSU. He transferred to CSUSM after a season in Baton Rouge and immediately made an impact for the Cougars.
He was named Association of Independent Institutions Pitcher of the Year in 2012, but went without a phone call during last year's draft.
Dykstra returned to CSUSM in 2013 to set single-season school records for wins, ERA for pitchers over 30 innings, strikeouts and complete games. He played a large role in helping CSUSM to its second A.I.I. Conference title and a trip to the NAIA Opening Round.
