Cougars Eliminated from A.I.I. Championships

CSUSM fell 4-3 to the University of British Columbia on Thursday afternoon

Box Score VICTORIA, Texas – The top-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team had its Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference tournament run stopped short, as third-seeded University of British Columbia edged the Cougars, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon at Victoria Youth Sports Complex.

Alana Westerhof's RBI double in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie that gave UBC (25-20) its first and only lead of the ball game.

Alex Miller helped CSUSM (40-10) take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, knocking home Kaitlin McGinley and Brittany Guy with a single to right field.

UBC answered in its first at-bat, as Cassandra Dypchy brought home Brittany Meyer with a double to right center.

McGinley led off the third with a single before taking second on an error by the pitcher. She moved to third on Guy's sacrifice bunt before scoring on an RBI groundout from Miller.

From there the Cougars struggled at the dish, as UBC starter Nicole Day (7-7) held CSUSM without a hit the final four innings.

The Thunderbirds evened the score at 3-3 when Westerhof cracked a two-out, two-run triple to right. Two innings later, it was Westerhof who knocked in the deciding run.

Katie Wilkinson (5-4) worked five innings for the Cougars, striking out three.

CSUSM will await its postseason fate when the NAIA releases the automatic qualifiers and at-large berths next week.
