Box Score Updated Bracket
VICTORIA, Texas – The No. 1-seed Cal State San Marcos softball team was upended by No. 5-seed LSU Alexandria, 4-2, in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championships on Wednesday afternoon at Victoria Youth Sports Complex.

The Cougars (40-9) face the winner of No. 4-seed Ashford (Iowa) and No. 3-seed British Columbia on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. PST in an elimination game.

CSUSM took an early lead, but a series of infield miscues surrendered three runs for the Lady Generals (18-24) before LSUA added its final score in its final at-bat.

Caylyn Rodriguez singled through the left side to bring home Melyssa Bellamy to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.

LSUA put runners on first and second with no out in the bottom of the second before Mallory Waggoner laid down a bunt. CSUSM starter Cortney Allen (31-5) went to third with the throw, but Racquel Granodos beat the throw to load the bases for the Lady Generals.

Jessie Reyes made it 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to left.

Allen then struck out the next hitter for the second out of the inning. She followed with another strikeout, but the ball got away from catcher Tani Lesau and traveled to the back stop. Amanda Harmon scurried home from third to hand LSUA a 2-1 lead and keep the inning alive. Allen responded by striking out Calla Willoughby, her third strikeout of the frame.

The bottom of the fourth looked like a routine inning for CSUSM, but LSUA was able to put together a pair of two-out singles to put runners on first and third. The Lady Generals put on the double steal, as Pauline Gonzalez took off from first.

Gonzalez slid safely into second, allowing Hall time to come home from third without a throw to the plate by the Cougars.

CSUSM came knocking in the top of the fifth. Kaitlin McGinley and Brittany Guy put together consecutive one-out bunt singles before taking second and third when LSUA's defense failed to cover the bases. Alex Miller then reached on a fielder's choice to third and McGinley beat the throw to the plate to make it 3-2.

Olivia Lucatuorto tried to squeeze-home Guy from third, but the LSUA catcher did a nice job of blocking the plate while tagging out Guy for the second out of the inning. Sarah Quimbao struck-out to end the threat.

The Cougars had another dangerous inning in their next at-bat, as Lesau reached with one out thanks to an error by the LSUA second baseman. Bellamy followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second. They moved to second and third on Rodriguez's groundout to the right side, but the Cougars couldn't take advantage. McGinley grounded out out to second base to leave CSUSM trailing by one.

The Lady Generals added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Casey Cocoran led-off with a double to right-center. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before Gonzalez brought her home on a single to right.

CSUSM flashed a glimmer of hope in its final at-bat, as Guy reached on a throwing error by the LSUA shortstop. However, the Lady Generals turned a double play on Miller's grounder to the left side before Lucatuorto grounded out to end the game.
