Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team used a seven-run second inning to break the game open in its 13-3 victory over Azusa Pacific on Tuesday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.
Kyle Secciani went 3-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI in his return from illness, while
Kody Sepulveda continued his hot streak with a 3-for-5 day.
Kenny Belzer,
Brooks Noble,
Marcus Meraz and
Kyle Kuck each had two hits.
CSUSM has now won five in a row and stands at 27-6 overall. The Cougars have surpassed their 2012 win total of 26.
Azusa Pacific (10-25) connected with three hits in its first at-bat and Matt Kimmel made it 1-0 with a single through the left side to score Tyler Putjenter.
Secciani, making his first plate appearance after missing the entire four-game series over the weekend vs. La Sierra, launched Jason Plowman's (2-5) 2-1 fastball over the right centerfield fence to make it 1-1.
Noble drove in Belzer with a single up the middle to make it 2-1 in the second inning before Kuck singled to load the bases.
Tyler Bernard and Secciani then drew back-to-back walks to bring two more runners across.
Bentson followed with a single to center field that would have driven in just Kuck and Bernard, but a misplay by Mitch Dergazarian in center field allowed Secciani to score from first to clear the bases and make it 7-1.
Sepulveda picked up Bentson from third with an RBI single up the middle.
Leading by seven, CSUSM starter
Matt Bataska (2-1) was in cruise control most of the afternoon. He worked six innings while allowing six hits and three earned runs in his first start of the season.
Sepulveda notched his second RBI single of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth with a roller up the middle to bring home
Mike Guadagnini. Belzer doubled off the center field wall to bring home Sepulveda and Bentson. Meraz then singled through the right side to bring Belzer in and put CSUSM up 10, 12-2.
Frank Charlton came on in relief of Bataska and threw two solid innings, giving up one hit while striking out three.
For good measure, Kuck added a two-out, solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth to make it 13-3. He then worked the final inning on the rubber for the Cougars, where he struck-out a pair.
CSUSM faces Westmont College at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field. The teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday in Santa Barbara.
